Indian-origin kids are US spelling bee champs, again

May 30, 2015

National Harbor (United States)/ Bengaluru: May 30: The world’s premier spelling bee ended in a tie on Thursday in the US for the second year in a row after an intense 10-round showdown between two young Indian-origin contestants who tackled some of the obscurest English words.

US spelling

Vanya Shivashankar, 13, and Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, hoisted the gold trophy amid a flurry of confetti after they clinched the 88th Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Vanya, sister of 2009 champion Kavya Shivashankar, oozed confidence as she breezed through such words as cytopoiesis, bouquetiere and thamakau. Gokul, a basketball fanatic, also tackled words like poblacion, caudillismo and nixtamal with panache.

The two winners will each receive over $37,000 in cash and prizes. With this year’s success, young Indian-Americans have won as many as 14 of the past 18 contests and the eighth year in a row. This is also the first time a former champion’s sibling won.

When Vanya, in the 14th round, correctly spelled scherenschnitte, the German-derived word for artistic paper cutting, official bee pronouncer Jacques Bailly broke the news to Gokul. The contest, he said, was about to run out of words, and if Gokul spelled his next correctly, he and his rival would be joint winners—a repeat of last year’s surprise tie.

The winning word came so easily to the eighth-grader from St Louis, Missouri, that he skipped the routine of asking for the word’s origin, meaning and usage in a sentence. “N-u-n-a-t-a-k,” he said, spelling the Inuit-derived word for a glacial island.

Asked later what went through his mind on hearing the word, Venkatachalam candidly replied: “Me and Vanya are going to be champions.”

It was the fifth time the National Spelling Bee ended in a tie since it began in 1925.

Mysuru connection

“This is a dream come true. I’ve wanted this for such a long time,” said the eighth-grader. She dedicated her victory to her grandmother, who died last October.

Her other grandmother, Lakshmi Latha Govindappa, stays near Matha Amruthanandamayi Peetham Bogadi II Stage in Mysuru.

Coming in third was Indian-origin 14-year-old Cole Shafer-Ray, an eighth-grader from Oklahoma, who fumbled in round four on acritarch, a word for small organic fossils.

Vanya said her parents have played an important role in her accomplishment. Her mother, Sandhya Shivashankar, is an alumnus of the class of 1985 of Marimallappa’s College, Mysuru.

Mangaluru, Apr 23: As an outbreak of avian flu has been reported in some districts of neighbouring Kerala, the border areas of Karnataka, including Mangaluru, have been put on high alert, officials of the Karnataka Animal Husbandry department said.

At present, the situation in Kerala is being monitored before any action can be taken, they said.

“Our Kerala counterparts have assured us that the avian flu has been contained within Alappuzha district. However, loading, booking and carrying poultry and poultry products on trains and at railway stations are still under consideration (surveillance), the officials said.

Not only railways but also road transport ferrying chicken loads from Kerala to Mangaluru are under surveillance. Mangaluru, being one of the largest consumers of chicken from Kerala, has halted chicken procurement from Kerala-based suppliers.

Sudhakar Shetty, a market functionary, stated, “The animal husbandry department of Kerala has advised containment of avian flu within a few districts in Kerala. We are closely monitoring the situation.” Despite this, the market has not experienced significant fluctuations in supply yet, as local stocks have been adequate to meet the demand for the next few days.

Demand for chicken could fall for a few days due to a series of temple festivals in coastal areas, where many consumers refrain from consuming meat-based meals until Saturday. Nevertheless, Sunday could witness a change, as consumers may desire hot chicken curry for their Sunday meals, according to the local people.

As officials in the animal husbandry department in Dakshina Kannada have raised awareness in the market about avian flu in the neighbouring state, the question arises whether prices will fall if demand decreases.

“We do not want to contribute to the hysteria surrounding avian flu until our local stock falls below the level of demand,” said Aston D’Souza, a farm owner.

Dakshina Kannada also serves as a good market for suppliers from Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru.

“In case supplies dwindle due to an unlikely prolonged shutdown of Kerala supplies, we can always purchase from those districts, albeit at a slightly higher cost than Kerala stock,” Shetty said.

Bengaluru: All India Mahila Congress President Alka Lamba on Monday accused the BJP and JD(S) of being silent over the alleged sex scandal involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna and said the horrifying case of violence against women has shocked the nation.

"More than 3000 videos with hundreds of women being sexually harassed, violated and even brutalised by MP Prajwal Revanna over the past few years have shaken the conscience of Kannadigas and Indians alike," she told at a press conference here.

Prajwal (33) is grandson of JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. JD(S) joined the NDA in September last year. He was the NDA candidate in Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went for polls on April 26.

According to police sources, he left the country after voting was over.

The Congress government in Karnataka on Sunday constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the alleged sex scandal.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days.

Lamba said the horrifying case of sexual violence against hundreds of women has shocked the nation.

"These acts of sexual brutality against hapless women has revealed the depravity of MP Prajwal Revanna, but the silence and sheer apathy of the BJP and JDS in this horrendous case is absolutely shameful," she said.

She alleged that in these videos, some recorded against the consent of the victim, women are seen pleading to be spared but the MP continues to brutalise and sexually violate them. Party 'karyakartas', panchayat members, elderly women, women who came asking for help to him and even maids have not been spared.

"The horrible fact is, that the acts of this sexual predator MP Prajwal Revanna was endorsed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he campaigned in Old Mysuru Region on April 14th, 2024," she alleged.

"....the BJP JDS are still silent which shows you their true Anti Woman DNA!! Will the BJP or JDS answer?".

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.
