Mangaluru, May 30: In a bizarre incident, a Social Democratic Party of India-backed candidate and a Congress party activist were arrested after they allegedly run away with ballot book during gram panchayat election at Ulaibettu village in Mangaluru taluk.
The arrested are Abdul Razzak (32), an SDPI backed candidate, who is contesting from the Ulaibettu Gram Panchayat and Congress activist Vitals Ameen (61).
Both were arrested for offences under the Indian Penal Code and also under the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act. After being produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, Razzak was remanded to judicial custody while Ameen was released on bail.
The Mangaluru Rural Police said Abdul Razzak entered the polling booth in Permanki where around three persons were in the queue waiting to cast their vote. He asked polling officer Climent Pramila Salins to show him ballot papers around 11 a.m.
While seeing the ballot papers, the Abdul Razzak and Ameen raised objection to impression on the front side of ballot paper of the seal on the rear side.
After heated arguments with the officer, Abdul Razzak moved out the polling booth with the entire ballot book and reportedly handed it over to Ameen.
The officer raised an alarm that led the police stationed at the booth to chase down the duo who had started to move in a two-wheeler.
