Mangaluru, Jun 30: The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to develop eight main markets in its limits for the convenience of both traders and citizens, in two phases.
Since several markets in the city limits are hard to pass through, the city corporation is preparing a project for construction of modernised markets in place of the existing ones. This developed project will be executed in two phases.
In the first phase, Central Market, Kadri, Kankanady and Suratkal markets will be developed. For this, the MCC has proposed a budget of Rs 312.97 crore for the development project of the above mentioned four markets in the first phase.
If necessary, privately-owned vacant land adjacent to the existing markets will be acquired during the development of the markets. In this regard, it has been decided to identify and list the existing traders in the market to construct stalls in the new developed market as required.
It has been decided to allot a sum of Rs 149 crore for the development of Central Market, Rs 10.39 crore for Kadri market, Rs 40.39 crore for Kankanady market and Rs 112.71 crore for Suratkal market.
In the second phase, the markets at Kavoor, Bikarnakatte, Alape and Car Street will be developed.
The process of preparing the project report for the development and modernisation of the four markets is underway and it will be placed before the council for approval once the detailed project report (DPR) was finalised after examining the proposed budgetary allotment and technical aspects for the project.
It has also been decided to give priority to the development and widening of connecting road leading to the markets. If additional land was required for the widening, adjacent private land will be acquired for this process by the MCC.
MCC Mayor Jacintha Alfred said that plans were on the anvil to modernise and set up hi-tech markets in city corporation limits with better facilities.
The city corporation will implement the development project with the help of the government or on a public-private partnership. After preparing the DPR for the development project in the first phase, the project will be tabled in the general council meeting for approval, she said.
