Mangaluru, Jul 6: In a tragic accident, the rider of a scooter met with a brutal death when it collided with a bus near Kolya on the outskirts of the city on Sunday night. The deceased has been identified as Shivaprasad Naik (44), resident of Kolya.
The accident occurred when Shivaprasad was returning from his mother's house in Kolya to his quarters at Bendoor in Mangaluru. An oncoming government bus from Kerala plying from Mangaluru towards Kasargod collided with the scooter and resulted in the brutal death of Shivaprasad.
The deceased had been employed in the water supply department of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).
As always, he had been to visit his mother in Kolya and was returning in his Honda scooter when the accident occurred. Usually, he would travel to Kolya and return by bus. However, being a Sunday, he had taken the two wheeler to Kolya on the fateful day.
According to witnesses, Shivaprasad had been trying to cross the national highway near Kolya when the speeding bus collided with his two wheeler and dragged him along for around 50 meters.
It is said that his body had been mangled and trapped under the bus, and the locals took nearly half an hour to pull him from underneath. However, he had lost his life by then.
Angered by the speeding bus, the locals began pelting stones and broke the windows of the bus. During this while, the driver and the conductor of the bus, along with few passengers, fled from the spot.
The deceased is survived by his wife and mother. A case has been registered in this regard at Ullal police station.
