Udupi, Jul 27: Undeterred by the temporary ban on his public speech imposed by the Udupi district police, Sri Rama Sene chief Pramod Muthalik on Monday staged a novel protest against Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and AIMIM supremo Asaduddin Owaisi for allegedly expressing their unhappiness over the controversial death penalty awarded to Yakub Memon in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
The protest comes a day after India’s one of the three biggest superstars came out in defence of Yakub Memon saying the wrong man is being hung for the crimes of his brother Tiger Memon. However, within hours Mr Khan had apologised for his controversial statement on twitter.
Prior to Bollywood star’s tweet, Mr Owaisi had accused the Centre of indulging in religious discrimination and said the government should execute all death row convicts. "The killers of Rajiv Gandhi and Beant Singh have the backing of political parties in Tamil Nadu and Punjab. Which political party is backing Yakub Memon? Shiromani Akali Dal in Punjab has gone to the extent of pardoning Balwant Singh Rajoana," Owaisi said.
Activists of Sri Ram Sene, who gathered in front of Clock Tower in udupi, raised slogans against Mr Khan and Mr Owaisi and burnt their images while Mr Muthalik sitting inside a car slammed Udupi Superintendent of Police for not allowing him to deliver a public speech.
Speaking to media persons, Mr Muthalik accused the Udupi police of discriminating against Hindus and trying to curb their constitutional rights by imposing “unnecessary ban” on their “leaders”.
He said that if people like Salman Khan and Owaisi did not have faith in the Indian judiciary, they should leave the country and settle in Pakistan.
