Udupi, Jul 28: Four members of a gang of inter-state thieves, who were involved at least in four cases of thefts in three different places in Udupi district between July 1 and July 7, have been arrested by the police.
Santosh Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police, told media persons that the four of them were travelling by a mini-lorry when they were arrested at Siddapura village coming under Shankarnarayana police station in Kundapur taluk on July 26.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team stopped the truck moving from Bengaluru to Kundapur and searched it at Siddapur around 4 p.m. on Sunday.
During the operations, a pistol, five bullets, 20 mobile telephones, a cutter and wooden rods were recovered from them.
The arrested have been identified as Giridharlal (21), Manikchand (38), Prakash (24) and Sunil Sen (19). All the four are from Pale district in Rajasthan.
Other members of the gang, Nathuram, Bada Dinesh and Chota Dinesh, are absconding. The police are trying to trace them. This gang had targeted and conducted theft in mobile telephone, electrical and electronic goods shops in the district.
On interrogation, the four arrested persons confessed to having been involved in a case of theft in each in Koteshwar village and Karkala town and two cases of theft in Hemmady village between July 1 and July 6.
The police have also seized nearly 60 per cent of electrical, electronic goods and mobile sets from the gang.
The four accused were produced in a court in Kundapur on Monday, which remanded them in police custody for five days, Mr. Kumar said.
