Mangaluru, Jul 28: Hundreds of students and lecturers from various colleges across the city paid homage to the former President of India and scientist Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and offered floral tribute to his portrait at Government Women’s PU College, Balmatta here on Tuesday, as the nation mourned the loss of a great personality with his unexpected demise in Shillong a day earlier.

Mlore kalam

A day after Dr Kalam collapsed while delivering a lecture at IIM-Shillong and passed away, a public condolence meeting was held in Mangaluru to pay homage to the former Statesman, who was also known as the ‘Missile Man’.

Students and lecturers from Government Women’s PU College, Government First Grade College for Women, Balmatta, Government First Grade College, Car Street, Badria First Grade College, Bunder, Capitanio PU College, Nagori, St Agnes College, Bendoor, St Aloysius College, Milagres PU College, Hampankatta, Sri Gokarnanatheshwara College, Mannagudda, Government Junior College, Bokkapatna and other colleges, gathered at the venue to pay tribute and homage to Dr Abdul Kalam, who was extremely popular among students.

Speaking on the occasion, Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo said that when word of the sudden death of former president of India reached the masses, the nation was in a state of shock and sorrow at his demise. Dr Kalam was not merely a president of the country, but a symbol of India’s pride and accomplishments. He was an icon for the youth and served as a great leader of the country, along with his achievements as a great scientist. In the 83 years of his life, he has contributed immensely to the progress of the country and left his mark as a world-renowned scientist and teacher. The nation today lost a man of extraordinary vision and exceptional character, he said.

Mourning his death, Mr Lobo said that Dr Kalam had himself strived hard to realise his dreams and take the country forward in the field of science and space technology. In every aspect, he was secular minded person; one whose personality and way of thinking is an example for every individual in the country. The people of India have lost a great man, he said.

For a man who possessed great love for students and youth, the biggest tribute for his memory will be teaching students about Dr Kalam’s life, his work and anecdotes from his life in between regular classes in all schools and colleges across the district. A circular will also be issued to schools in Dakshina Kannada in this regard. Following his examples will enable and inspire more students and fuel more dreams, he told the gathering, offering condolences to the family members of the late scientist

St Aloysius College mourns

The students, management and faculty of St Aloysius College (Autonomous) on Tuesday congregated together to condole the death of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The ‘Peoples’ President' as he is known, had been a mentor and a friend to the staff and students of St Aloysius College. An alumnus of a Jesuit institution himself, Dr Kalam studied in St Joseph’s College, Trichy and during his visit to St Aloysius College in March 2003 to inaugurate the PG and IT block back he had said that “Jesuit education is a tradition of traditions.”

Dr. Kalam’s love for students was reciprocated by the students for his departed soul as they sang hymns, respectfully bowing their heads and praying silently in respect. Verses from the holy scriptures Qur’an, Bible and Bhagavad Gita were recited to provide solace to the multi-talented Missile Man.

Rev. Fr Swebert D’Silva S J, the Principal of the College, quoted a few statements of Dr Kalam and said that the nation has lost a great mind, a technocrat and a scientist.

With a memory of Dr Kalam lingering in his mind, Fr Swebert said, “Dr Kalam would never rest. He was dynamic, active and so quick in his movements and thoughts. An epitome of humility and friendliness was his character. We lost a great friend of our nation, a missionary who would have taken India to greater heights. He also ignited the minds of so many young people to work for the cause of the beloved nation.”

The programme was initiated with a prayer service headed by Rev. Fr Francis Almeida, Campus minister of the college. Dr AM Narahari, Registrar, Dr Veronica Judith Carlo, Vice-principal of the college, Dr A Lourdasamy, Dean of PG studies, Dr Rose Veera D’souza, HOD of Political Science Department and Rachel D’souza of 3rd B A paid glorious tributes to Dr Kalam.

Bengaluru: Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued a series of animated shorts in Kannada advising people of appropriate measures to take during extreme temperatures to keep oneself safe.

“Karnataka has not seen such extreme temperatures and heat waves in the recent past. So, we wanted to ensure a wider reach for safety measures, therefore we decided to issue them in a reader-friendly format,” said an official from KSNDMC.

Meteorological Centre Bengaluru, Indian Meteorological Department, had issued a five-day heat wave warning, lasting till April orange alert, for parts of Karnataka.

“In places like Bagalkote, Vijayapura, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Tumkur, Mandya, Gadag, Davangere and Chitradurga, the temperature is likely to touch 40 degrees Celsius tomorrow,” said C P Patil, director of the centre.

On April 25, these places recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius.

Orange alert would mean increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are exposed to sun for a prolonged period of time as well as those who do heavy manual work.

According to Patil, coastal Karnataka will also have very hot and humid weather conditions, making it very uncomfortable for people there.

“It’s best for children and old people to avoid exposure to heat in coastal areas too,” added Patil.

In places where heat wave is predicted, people are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12 noon and 3pm.

“When they go out, it is best to use protective goggles, an umbrella or a hat. Also aerated drinks must be avoided since they cause dehydration. Best to drink water as much as possible, even if you don’t feel thirsty,” said M Rajavel, head of LACD, Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru.

People are also advised not to leave the children or pets inside parked vehicles.

The maximum and minimum temperatures of Bengaluru are very likely to be around 37 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius respectively for the next 48 hours, said Patil.

Hassan recorded the highest jump from its normal minimum temperature. It recorded 22.6 degrees Celsius, about 2.8 degrees more than usual.

According to IMD, on April 29 light rain is also very likely in isolated places over Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya and Chitradurga districts.

On April 30, light rain is predicted again for Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, Tumkur, Chikkaballapura, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban and Kodagu districts.

Incidentally, KSNDMC has also issued a series of animated advisory for lightning safety.

“We also update temperature every 15 minutes in our X handle in coordination with IMD,” added the KSNDMC official.

Hubballi, Apr 23: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday spoke to father of slain student Neha Hiremath over phone and said "sorry" over his daughter's killing, and assured that "we will be on your side".

The Chief Minister also informed Niranjan Hiremath, who is also a Congress councillor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, about the government's decision to hand over the murder case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and setting up a special court to fast-track trial.

"Niranjan... very sorry. We will be on your side," Siddaramaiah told Hiremath over the phone call during state's Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil's visit to Hiremath's house here.

In the conversation on Patil's phone with speakers on, Siddaramaiah can be heard informing Hiremath about the CID probe and setting up a special court.

"It is a serious offence... setting up a special court will ensure punishment for the accused person."

Hiremath thanked Siddaramaiah on behalf of his family well-wishers and the community for handing over the case to CID and setting up a special court "...ensure there is an order at the earliest and provide us justice," he said, as he also thanked Patil, Home Minister G Parameshwara, local Congress MLA Prasad Abbayya and others for their support.

Replying to this, Siddaramaiah said, "We will ensure it, at the earliest."

In a shocking incident, Neha Hiremath (23), was stabbed to death on the campus of BVB College last Thursday. The accused Fayaz Khondunaik, who fled from the scene, was arrested by the police subsequently.

Neha was a first year Master of Computer Application (MCA) student and Fayaz was earlier her classmate.

Siddaramaih on Monday had announced his government has decided to hand over the investigation into the incident to the Crime Investigation Department, and to set up a special court for speedy disposal of the case.

The case of brutal murder, which sparked widespread outrage, has snowballed into a political slugfest between ruling Congress and opposition BJP.

While the ruling party has tried to project it as an incident with personal angle, the saffron party has called it a "love jihad" case and has said it's a testimony of deterioration of law and order in the state.

Earlier, Siddarmaiah's statement that the murder was due to "personal reasons" and Home Minister G Parameshwara's comments that the duo was in love, has elicited sharp reactions from Hiremath and family members and opposition parties.

Hassan, May 2: JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna on Thursday said that the scandal and charges of sexual abuse levelled against his brother and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna was a "conspiracy to weaken their family politically".

He claimed that he has no information about the whereabouts of Prajwal Revanna, who has been served a notice by the Special Investigation Team over the alleged sex scandal involving him.

He termed the scandal and charges of sexual abuse against his brother and his father and MLA H D Revanna, a former Minister, as a conspiracy to weaken them politically, and expressed confidence about Prajwal's win in the Lok Sabha polls.

H D Revanna is the son of JD(S) patriarch and former PM H D Deve Gowda. Prajwal, grandson of Deve Gowda, was the BJP-JD(S) alliance's candidate from Hassan Lok Sabha segment, which went to the polls on April 26.

"The (sex scandal involving Prajwal Revanna) case has been handed over for investigation (to SIT), whatever has to be proved will get proved there. How can I react to it? I don't have information about Prajwal Revanna," Suraj Revanna told reporters here.

On an FIR being registered against his father H D Revanna too, he said, "Let them put a thousand more (FIRs), what has to be proved will ultimately get proved. People of our taluk and district know what Revanna is. I don't want to react."

"Anyone can do anything out of political malice. If you take Hassan politics, there is no competitor for Revanna. There is no one who has done politics like him. To weaken him, all these conspiracies are being hatched," he added.

Scores of explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna had started making the rounds in Hassan recently. The state government has constituted an SIT to probe the alleged sex scandal involving the MP.

The SIT on Tuesday issued notice to Prajwal Revanna and his father Revanna, who have been booked for alleged sexual harassment at the Holenarsipura police station in Hassan district on April 28, based on a complaint by a woman who worked in their house, directing them to appear for investigation.

Prajwal who reportedly left for Germany on April 27, the very next day of the polls, on Wednesday sought seven days' time to appear before the SIT.

Regarding reports of his meeting with Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, Suraj said they were mere speculations and that he had met the former in January, and after that no such meeting had taken place.

Asked whether JD(S) leaders and workers seem to be in some sort of confusion following the developments around the alleged sex scandal, the MLC said there is no confusion. "Even yesterday there were meetings held to take stock of the situation after the polls. Hundred percent Prajwal Revanna will win."

"Let anyone charge anything, let's wait and see what comes out of the SIT probe," he added.

Victims under pressure?

Meanwhile, victims in the videos of the alleged sex scandal involving the MP, are reportedly refusing to come before the SIT which is probing the case.

Some of the victims are said to have told the SIT officials that they don't want to talk to them about the case, while a few are not reachable, sources said.
