Mangaluru, Aug 3: The Shiradi Ghat stretch of the National Highway 75, which connects Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Hassan will be thrown open for all vehicles on Monday, August 10, after a complete inspection of the concretisation and strengthening works on the stretch.
It may be recalled that the stretch had been closed for vehicles since January 2 this year owing to the ongoing repair and strengthening work. A 13-kilometre stretch of the Shiradi Ghat was set to be concretised at a cost of nearly Rs 70 crore.
Speaking at a press conference in this regard on Monday, Minister for Forests and Environment B Ramanath Rai said that the concretisation work had been completed on the particular stretch and only minor works such as construction of crash barriers, installing sign boards and curing of the concrete stretch was pending, which will be completed by Sunday.
An inspection of all the completed works will be conducted by state PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa and senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes on Sunday, and the concretised stretch will be formally inaugurated on Monday. Both light and heavy motor vehicles will be allowed to ply on the Shiradi Ghat stretch, he said.
Mr Rai said that the remaining work would be taken up in the second phase, for which the tender is in the approval stage.
The Shiradi Ghat stretch is about 26 kilometres. So far, the strengthening of only 13 kilometres has been completed. Therefore, the stretch might have to be closed again for vehicle movement during the second phase work. Until the Shiradi Ghat stretch remains closed for vehicle movement, vehicles have been plying on the Charmadi Ghat stretch and other alternative roads to reach Mangaluru and other areas in Dakshina Kannada district.
