Mangaluru, Aug 28: Urging stringent action against those who involved in fresh incident of ‘saffron goondaism’ where a Muslim youth was tied, stripped and beaten for being in company of a Hindu woman in the city, Congress leader and MLC Ivan D’Souza said that Home Minister KJ George would hold a review meeting soon in the backdrop of increasing instances of assault by vigilante groups.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said that the brutal assault on the Muslim youth, which was being discussed across the world, had brought disgrace to Mangaluru city and Dakshina Kannada district and shame to the entire state. It is a preplanned crime committed by members of saffron outfits, for which they should be punished, he said.
He said that he had requested the home minister to conduct a state-level review meeting, and he had agreed conduct one shortly. “An assessment of all cases of moral policing by vigilante groups in Dakshina Kannada will be done. I will request the district in-charge minister Ramanath Rai to conduct an inquiry to determine reasons behind the recurrence of moral policing acts in the district,” he told reporters.
He said that the main intention of communal forces was to wreck the peace in the society. The arrest of 13 persons accused in the Attavar assault case has confirmed the direct involvement of members belonging to saffron outfits, he said, praising the police for their speedy action in the case.
