Udupi, Aug 29: The Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike (KKSV) has urged the state government and police department to take immediate steps prevent recurrence of immoral rowdyism by communal outfits in costal Karnataka.
Activists of the Udupi district unit of KKSV and other groups staged a dharna in front of the Clock Tower here on Friday condemning the incident of stripping and thrashing of a 28-year-old youth for talking to a girl in Mangaluru on August 24.
Addressing the protestors, K. Phaniraj, Vice President of the district unit of the Vedike said the incident was grossly inhuman. Any incident of assault was illegal.
But, in this case, right-wing activists tied the youth to a pole, stripped him down to his undergarments and beat him in full public view.
“This is the height of cruelty. There is a real fear of civil society collapsing in the coastal districts of Karnataka,” he said. The incident was captured on phones and uploaded on social media. “The video clips show the activists hurling abuses at the girl. This is an uncivil assault on the woman,” he said.
He said the possibility of the groups having exerted pressure on the girl to lodge a counter-complaint against the youth could not be ruled out.
