Belagavi/Yadgir/ Bagalkot, Sep 26: The communal violence, which erupted in Bgalkot district two days ago during a Ganapati immersion procession, spread across north Karnataka on Friday.

Chikkodi in Belagavi district and Surpur in Yadgir district saw communal violence on Thursday night and Friday, with groups of youths in both places barging into localities dominated by Muslim community, alleging attempts of cow slaughter on the day of Bakrid or Eid al-Adha.
Mudhol town in Bagalkot district on Wednesday night saw communal violence during a Ganesh immersion procession, leading to destruction of property, with 21 vehicles, two houses and 40 shops burnt.
In Chikkodi, trouble started after a group of youths from one locality entered another with weapons and cameras alleging cow slaughter and sought to know which meat was being used to cook dishes for Bakrid celebrations.
A few residents objected to the actions of the youths, resulting in an altercation. In the clash that followed, nine persons of both communities were injured. Two cases have been registered at Chikkodi police station.
On the outskirts of Surpur town, there was a clash between a group of youth and members affiliated to a right-wing outfit, after the latter tried to take photographs of cattle tied outside homes, alleging they were meant for slaughter. One person was injured in the clash that ensued. No arrests have been made so far.
Low-key Bakrid
Bakrid celebrations were a low-key affair at Mudhol town in the district thanks to the Sangh Parivar violence. The festival was celebrated under heavy police security, with a posse of policemen deployed at mosques in the town.
Superintendent of Police Yuda Martin Marbaniang said that Section 144 of CrPC had been imposed in the area after the incident. The situation is under control, he added.
Sixty-nine persons were arrested in connection with rioting and investigation is under way. Property was destroyed after violence broke out when a group participating in the immersion procession turned violent and began pelting stones, torching vehicles and setting shops on fire. Around 21 vehicles, two houses and 40 shops were burnt down during the violence.
According to eyewitnesses, some miscreants even tried to prevent fire-fighters and police officers from doing their job by pelting stone on them. Meanwhile, district in-charge Minister S.R. Patil has instructed the police to keep a strong watch and said that the matter had been appraised to the Home Minister and the Chief Minister. Top police officials are camping in the city.
