Mangaluru, Oct 10: Nearly four years after prominent BJP leader and then chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda approved the Yettinahole river diversion project, the Dakshina Kannada unit of BJP on Saturday launched a four day padayatra holding incumbent Congress government responsible for the controversial project.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, the Members of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, is leading the protest march flagged off by Pratap Simha Nayak, DK district committee president of BJP at Shree Brahma Baiderkala Temple, here.
The padayatra, with the slogan ‘Save Nethravati, save Dakshina Kannada’ is expected to culminate at the project site. On the first day hundreds of people, most of them BJP activists, took part in the padayatra.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Kateel, who had remained silent when Mr Gowda approved the controversial project, urged various organisations and people fighting against the Yettinahole project to speak in one voice against it.
“If everyone supports this padayatra from Mangaluru to Yettinahole between October 10 and October 13, the voice of the district will become stronger,” he said.
Mr Nayak said that his party wanted the Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka government to halt the ongoing works and find scientific ways for quenching the thirst of parched districts.
“The project in the present form is not acceptable. There are several unanswered issues and the government should clear all those doubts before going ahead with it,” he said.
He said as Lok Sabha Member he would do his best opposing the project on the floor of the House. He has joined hands with many protests against the project and is ready to continue the same. It is high time that every concerned citizen of the district joined hands and fought, he said.
