Mangaluru, Nov 25: Even a month after the newly-constructed market building was inaugurated in Jeppu, no vegetable or fish traders have come forward to use the building.
The new market building constructed at the cost of Rs 92.50 lakh by National Fisheries Development Corporation, Hyderabad and Department of Fisheries, Government of Karnataka, was inaugurated by urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake on October 19.
On the occasion, opposition councillor of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Premananda Shetty had claimed that the market building had been inaugurated in a hurry without providing electricity and water supply connections to the building. He further claimed that the inauguration had been hastily organised without prior discussion in the council meetings.
Presently, around 21 women sell raw fish in Jeppu Market, for whom the stalls have been allotted in the new market building.
While the fish traders would hand over a sum of Rs 4 per day as rent to the MCC prior to the establishment of the new market building, the rent was waived after the construction of the building began as there was no proper facility for the traders.
However, after the inauguration of the new market, the fish traders have objected to the increase in the rent, which is collected for the maintenance of the new building.
One of the councillors Deepak Poojary said that as per the government regulations, a sum of Rs 1,600 should be determined as the rent. However, considering the financial condition of the fisher women, the issue of decreasing the rent will be looked into, he said.
Local corporator Rathikala said that the fisher women were not ready to start using the new market building, owing to the disagreement over the rent, and also since few works were pending in the building.
Mr Premananda Shetty said that the MCC should begin the process of collecting rent from the traders after deciding on a fixed sum.
