It has brought together seven sister states’ handicrafts ranging from broom to classic cane and bamboo sofa sets, grass mats, basketry to textiles under a single roof.

Pretty grass boxes, baskets, bins, mattresses, bags made of bamboo and cane displayed in the festival define the region’s sustainable lifestyle. Fruit baskets, trays, lamp shades, wall hangings and vases from Assam, Nagaland and Manipur are also on display. Sofa sets, each with a distinct design, add colour to the expo. The cane and bamboo products by the artisans from northeastern states speak of fashion with dexterity.

Flowers made of soft wood, sweet corn leaf, natural dry flowers and palm leaves are the other attractions at the fair.

Sehumi, an artist from Nagaland, told Deccan Herald that she is making flowers using naturally available products like leaves and seeds for the last five years. “I use natural colours for giving a bright colour to the flowers,” she added.

Cane and bamboo crafts, handloom weaving, artistic textile weaving, wood carving, embroidery, jewellery, brass, and bell metal, basketry are some of the time-honoured traditional crafts of the northeastern region. The hand woven fabrics with rich and symbolic ornamentation of Assam, the eye-catching tribal ornaments made from cane, bamboo, glass beads and silver have added colour to the exhibition. Dolls made of straw, cushions and mattress of Manipur, Endi silk weaving and pineapple fibre articles of Meghalaya, and bamboo artistic cap of Mizoram catch the attention of the visitors.

Handicrafts Promotion Officer Jacob D’Souza said the objective of the exhibition is to promote sale of handicrafts, enhance awareness on handicrafts.

“It will also introduce craftsmen to the market and help in the launch of new products and designs. It will also help in overcoming the problem of middlemen in handicraft sector. The handicrafts and handloom sector in the northeast has been providing employment to 38 lakh people belonging to SC/ST and other weaker sections,” he added.

He said the main constraints in production and marketing of products are inadequate availability of raw materials, high price of cane and high cost of transportation.

More than 60 craftspersons and weavers are participating in the festival with their artistic creations, he stated. Odisha’s Patachitras, related to mythology and folklore, are also on display. Mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred inaugurated the festival on Thursday.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former union minister C M Ibrahim, who was expelled from Janata Dal (Secular) for protesting against party’s alliance with BJP, has stressed on need for a third front not just at the national level, but also in Karnataka.

Addressing a news conference in Bengaluru on Wednesday, he said he’s planning to form a third front in Karnataka along with Lingayat Seer Dingaleshwar Swami.

Ibrahim said that he will tour the state between April 27 and May 4 and that he would meet Dingaleshwar Swami on April 29. “There is a need for the third front in this country. We will try to establish a third front in association with the seer and we hope we will be successful in those efforts,” he said.

Expressing disappointment with the Congress for not doing enough to gain the full confidence of Muslims, Ibrahim said that Congress is concentrating only on certain communities for votes, and ignoring Muslims.

“The Congress is not even caring for Muslims and Dalit votes. In some Muslim areas they did not even hold campaigns seeking votes and trying to convince the communities which never vote in their favour. I fear this may lead to low turnout and Congress may lose its vote base,” he opined.

Mentioning about guarantees on which Congress is strongly relying during this election, Ibrahim said, such things won’t work all the time. “Guarantees will not work anymore. Every election you need to give something new to the voters,” he added.

On Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that Congress is trying to appease minorities for votes, Ibrahim requested both Congress and BJP parties not bring Muslims between them. “I request both parties. Leave us alone. Don’t make us sandwiches for your political sake. We are living with peace and hope even the Prime Minister will understand this,” Ibrahim added.

Launching a broadside against Prime Minister Deve Gowda, Ibrahim said, “Deve Gowda has sold his personality itself. Whatever I have told about JD(S) has come true. I pity, a former Prime Minister should not have come to this stage,” he said.

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday condemned the alleged sexual abuse of women involving Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna, asserting that the BJP will not tolerate any insult to women.

Revanna (33) is the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate for Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went to polls on April 26.

Earlier in the day, the JD(S) suspended Revanna from the party with immediate effect.

“The issue regarding Revanna that has been reported in the media is very hurtful and cannot be tolerated in any way,” Shah told a press conference here.

“The BJP’s stand is very clear; we will not tolerate any insult to ‘matri aur nari shakti’ (women empowerment),” he asserted.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, were circulated in Hassan over the last few days.

The home minister said Congress has been alleging that an NDA partner’s candidate is involved in the incident, “but I just want to ask a small question - whose government is there in that state (Karnataka)?”

“The Congress is in power in Karnataka, and this matter must have come to their attention. Why has it not taken any action on it so far? We cannot take any action as law and order is a state issue,” Shah said.
