Oscar, Jairam may be Cong high command's choice for Rajya Sabha?polls

New Delhi, May 27: The Congress high command may prefer two retiring members of the Rajya Sabha, Oscar Fernandes and Jairam Ramesh as its candidates for the election to the Upper House from Karnataka.

According to state party leaders, the high command may go for Fernandes, a loyal party leader, and Ramesh, a Kannadiga. He is also considered close to Rahul Gandhi. The Congress can easily win two seats and the high command is favouring Fernandes and Ramesh.

The party has so far has not given its indication about the candidature of Fernandes and Ramesh to the state leaders. However, a senior leader told Deccan Herald that the party had informed the state leaders that they would prefer those who are articulate and experienced. If the party top brass approved the state leaders' suggestion to field the third candidate, they would prefer Ramamurthy.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday said the high command will decide the party candidates for Rajya Sabha elections. Siddaramaiah and KPCC President G Parameshwara, who landed in the Delhi on Thursday, will hold first round of talks on Friday with Digvijaya Singh, party general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, to finalise the candidates. Later, they will meet party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi to get their approval, sources said.

During the meeting, they will also finalise the candidates for elections to the seven seats of Legislative Council from the Assembly, scheduled to held on June 10. While the party can win four seats, there are 35 aspirants. The probable candidates including Veeranna Mathikatti, Rani Satish, Allum Veerabhadrappa, Nasir Ahmed, Manjunath Kunnur, N Suryanarayana Reddy, Salim Ahmed, Manohar Inapur, Mallajamma and Anant.

As the government can fill three Council seats through nomination, the party has shortlisted the names of former MP and cine artiste Ramya, writers Marulasiddappa, H C Siddaramaiah, L Hanumanthaiah and Baraguru Ramachandrappa, sources said.

During the meeting, the state leaders will also discuss the long pending cabinet reshuffle, which is likely to take place by the end of next month.

Bengaluru: The results of the first examination for the 2nd Pre-University (PU) students were out Wednesday, registering an increase of six percentage points.

The results will be announced in colleges at around 3 pm today. Results were made available online at 11 am. Students can visit www.karresults.nic.in to check their scores.

A total of 6. 81 lakh candidates appeared for the examination and 5.52 lakh students passed. The overall pass percentage is 81.15 %. 305212 girls and 247478 boys passed the exam. The pass percentages of girls and boys are 84.87% and 76.98% respectively.

Medha D of NMKRV PU College, Bengaluru, emerged as the topper in the Arts stream by scoring 596 for 600.

In the Commerce stream, Gnanavi M from Vidyanidhi Independent PU College, Tumkur, topped the list by scoring 597 out of 600. In Science, the topper is A Vidyalakshmi of Vidyanikethan Science PU College, Hubballi, with 598.

Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board chairperson N Manjushree said the second exam will be held between April 29 and May 16. Students can apply for revaluation, she specified.

The Karnataka 12th examination was conducted from March 1, 2024, to March 22, 2024, at various exam centres in the state. 

According to officials, around 7 lakh students have appeared for Karnataka Class 12 board examination this year.

Mangaluru, Apr 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to campaign for the upcoming and much awaited Lok Sabha election in coastal Karnataka by holding a mega roadshow in Mangaluru. 

Meanwhile, the organisers have announced a slight delay in the commencement of Modi's scheduled roadshow on April 14 in Mangaluru.

Addressing the media BJP principal secretary and Karnataka MLA V Sunil Kumar said: Originally the roadshow was scheduled to begin at 5 pm., but it will start at 7:30 pm."

As planned, the Roadshow will kick off from Narayan Guru Circle, where Prime Minister Modi will pay floral tribute to Sri Narayan Guru idol. From there, the Roadshow will proceed and conclude at Navabharat Circle. 

Mr Kumar urged people traveling to Mangaluru to see Mr Modi's visit by 7 p.m. and stand behind the barricades. The roadshow is estimated to conclude at 8:30 pm.

Udupi: A middle aged couple lost their lives while their teenage son survived with critical wounds after a speeding car, which was travelling from Maharashtra to Kerala, fell off a flyover in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district. 

The deceased have been identified as Munnavar (49), who was driving the car, and his wife Sameera (41), a native of Kannur in Kerala. Their son Suhail (18), who was in the car, suffered severe injured and is recovering at Manipal Hospital. He is said to be out of danger.

The family was traveling from Kollapur to Kannur as Sameera was a native of Kannur. Their plan was to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr in Sameera’s parental home.  

However, on Tuesday (April 9) morning, when the car reached near Bobbaryanakatte, it reportedly went out of control of the driver and fell off the flyover on to the service road.

All three were immediately rushed to the hospital in Kundapur. Sameera died immediately upon admission to the hospital, while Munnavar succumbed to injuries at Manipal Hospital on April 10. The mortal remains of both were handed over to relatives after the post-mortem.

Kundapur DySp Belliyappa, Circle Inspector Nada Kunar, Traffic SIs Naveen Naik, and Savitri Nayak visited the accident spot for the inspection.
