Mangaluru, May 27: A youth lost his life and his friend suffered severe injuries in a suspected case of elephant attack at Moonglipade along the Bisle Ghat Road bordering Dakshina Kannada and Hassan on Friday.
Ganesh, 27, the victim and his friend Sunil Kumar, 30 on their way to Hassan in a motorcycle when they ran in to the wild elephant. While Ganesh hailed from Samudravalli village near Hassan was riding pillion, Sunil from Hanumanthapura village near Gorur was driving the motorcycle.
The incident took place on the Kukke Subrahmanya - Kulkunda - Bisleghat Road sometime between 6am and 7am. Sunil who was injured in the incident was admitted to a private hospital in Puttur and is out of danger.
The duo, friends were coming from Kulkunda near Subrahmanya when they spotted the elephant on the narrow road while negotiating a curve. Officials said a frightened Kumar apparently lost balance.
Although Ganesh regained himself and started running, the elephant attacked him and he died said K T Hanumanthappa, deputy conservator of forests, Dakshina Kannada who visited the spot said.
"It appears that the motorcycle might have hit the elephant while negotiating the curve as it was early morning and visibility was patchy," Hanumanthappa said adding the forest department will give compensation to family of the deceased after ascertaining the details.
The department will also bear the hospital expenses of the injured once he submits the bills. A case of unnatural death has been registered in Subrahmanya police station in this regard. Incidentally, man animal conflicts are not new to the region.
Reports of pachyderms attacking plantations in Sullia, and Belthangady taluks and parts of Kadaba in Puttur taluk in search of food or during their passage from one place to the other are common if not frequent.
