I?had painfully agreed to become PM: Deve Gowda recalls on 20th anniversary

On June 1, 1996, he became the first politician from Karnataka to assume charge as the prime minister of the country. Twenty years down the line, the JD(S) supremo HD?Deve Gowda still remains relevant in both state and national politics. In a freewheeling interview, Gowda, who has achieved several milestones recounts his political and personal journey. Here are the excerpts.

When the United Front chose him as the PM candidate

I had never aspired to become the prime minister. When my name was declared, I fell at Jyoti Basu's (then CPM politburo member) feet and told him not to punish me like this. I told him that he was committing a political blunder by announcing my name.

With tears in my eyes, I asked him to select somebody else. An angry Basu insisted that I accept the assignment. When I informed my wife, she literally cried and said that I was being made a political scapegoat. I painfully accepted the role.

From CM to PM

Not only had I given my head, but also had to endure much backstabbing. It was a nightmarish experience and I almost became mad. There were too many contenders for the chief minister's post which I was vacating and I had to make some quick decisions. Though J H Patel was the deputy chief minister, Siddaramaiah wanted to make it to the post. It was near impossible for me to convince Siddaramaiah. At Karnataka Bhavan in Delhi, a highly inebriated Patel hurled his footwear at Siddaramaiah for trying to bypass him and become the chief minister.

However, what pains me even to this day is the fact that my own partymen were waiting for my exit. When I resigned as chief minister, my cabinet colleagues didn't even give me a send off. Even to this day, I suffer sleepless nights because of these painful memories.

Friends and foes

My wife Channamma is my only best friend and confidante. She has stood by me at all times. There were times when we had gone to bed on empty stomachs owing to the circumstances. But, she has never complained. Though she has good knowledge of politics, she never questioned my decision. I reminisce about J?H Patel a lot, who was a fine politician. He always took my side - never a betrayer. He had promised me that he will bring JD(S) and JD(U) together and that would be a gift to me. I am surrounded by many enemies, but I do not want to name them.

Children, grandchildren

Kumaraswamy has always made political gambles. Earlier he never took my counsel, but these days he does. Revanna is constantly worried about my health. There isn't a temple where he hasn't offered pooja on my behalf. I have never been able to give much time to my children and grandchildren. But I want to see all my grandchildren getting married. Nikhil (Kumaraswamy's son) has chosen a career in films. Though I was not happy, I blessed him. I have the horoscopes of my entire family and I am certain that both Nikhil and Prajwal (Revanna's son) will enter politics one day.

Hot tempered by nature

I have always been hot tempered. As opposition leader, I have flung my spectacles and files when enraged. I used to be a hockey player. I remember having hit a boy called Neelakanta Rao so hard that the hockey stick itself broke. Over the years I have calmed down a lot. However, till date I have one bad habit. Good or bad, I can never accept defeat.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

Mangaluru: The Bengaluru-Mangaluru air route has recently surpassed the Mumbai route to become the busiest for Mangaluru International Airport.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s city pairing data for March this year, 51,734 passengers travelled between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, while 50,340 passengers flew on the Mangaluru-Mumbai route.

In January and February, the Mumbai air route had the highest passenger flow with 60,306 and 52,732 passengers, respectively, compared to 53,509 and 47,530 for Bengaluru during the same months. However, the trend shifted in March, with the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route surpassing Mumbai.

An official from MIA explained, “The first reason for Bengaluru taking over Mumbai is that flights that almost fly full to Mumbai were reduced from March, after the ministry of civil aviation suggested easing air traffic congestion at Mumbai airport. The air carrier IndiGo, which used to operate four flights a day from MIA, reduced it to three. Air India Express, which operates two flights a day, has made no changes. As a result of this, Bengaluru has taken over Mumbai. A total seven flights operates per day to Bengaluru.”

The official added that despite the reduction in flights, the Mumbai route still experiences high demand. DGCA data for 2023 shows that the Mumbai and Bengaluru sectors have experienced growth of 11.9% and 19.3%, respectively.

The Mangaluru-Mumbai sector has seen a total of 5,52,767 passengers, followed by Bengaluru with 5,52,500 passengers in the same calendar year.

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday, April 29, shared a letter purportedly written by BJP leader Devaraj Gowda to the Karnataka state president of the saffron party expressing concern about the pendrive containing sleazy videos of JD(S) leader and Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna.

The letter was apparently written on December 8, 2023.

The letter, written in Kannada by the Hassan BJP leader states that 2,976 clips were already with Congress leaders and would be ammo for the grand old party during the Lok Sabha elections. The letter also states that if Revanna is allowed to contest under the NDA banner, it is likely to negatively impact the BJP's image in the state.

Sharing this letter, Khera launched an attack on the BJP, asking why the party had chosen to enter into an alliance with JD(S) despite knowing about the pendrive. He also questioned the lack of action, sharing the stage with Prajwal Revanna, and asked who helped him 'escape to Germany'.

Khera also questioned PM Narendra Modi's silence on the matter. Notably, the PM has been vocal about women suffering sexual abuse elsewhere in the country, when a leader of the opposition party has been involved. Modi attacked the TMC government over Sheikh Shahjahan's actions in Sandeshkhali, which allegedly involve sexual harassment and illegal land grabbing.

The Congress leader, however, remained confident that Modi would stay mum on the Hassan sex scandal issue.

"Modi ji will be in Karnataka the entire day today. I can guarantee that he won’t find the courage to utter even a single word on this horrific case in the state wherein his alliance’s politician went around recording thousands of sex videos of several women in his pen drive, and has now absconded abroad!," Khera said on X (formerly Twitter).

While Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has ordered a special probe into the incident, the JD(S) has distanced itself from Prajwal with H D Kumaraswamy saying that while he wanted to wait for facts to come out after the probe, there was no question of forgiving someone who had committed a crime as per the law.

A sexual harassment and stalking case has been filed against former Karnataka Minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal, who is at the centre of the Hassan scandal.

A woman complainant said that she worked in Revanna's house from 2019 for three and a half years. During her time there, Revenna allegedly misbehaved with her, as did Prajwal, according to the woman's claims. She also claimed Prajwal sexually assaulted her repeatedly.

She also claimed the MP had used obscene language with her daughter during video calls, forcing her to block the number and quit her job.

H D Revanna is the elder son of JD(S) supremo and former PM H D Deve Gowda, and Prajwal is the party patriarch's grandson.
