Mangaluru, Jun 23: Dakshina Kannada district police has busted an inter-state gang of areca nut, cattle and vehicles thieves and recovered property worth Rs 20 lakh on Wednesday.
The arrests were carried out based on incidents reported in Vittal police station limits of Bantwal circle over the past one-year where a gang operated rampantly poisoning pet dogs and then taking away areca nut left for drying in the open yards in front of houses, and cattle from cow sheds.
Bhushan G Borase, superintendent of police said personnel of Vittal police station who were following up on the case continuously nabbed six accused in this connection from Chandalike in their limits based on definite information. The accused are Barik, 32 of Kolnad village; Bashir, 25, Ashraf, 19, Saifuddin, 19, of Vittla Padnuru; Jabir, 26 of Ira village, and Zubair K of Kudtamugeru village. Out of this, Barik is currently settled in Bakrabailu in Kasargod district.
Police seized two cars, one pick-up vehicles, one auto rickshaw, 1,500-kgs of areca nut and one cow from their possession, Bhushan said. The accused were involved in theft at an areca nut shop at Kudtamugeru in Kolnad village, theft of areca nut from house of Srinivas Acharya also in Kudtamugeru after poisoning his pet dog, of a similar offence at the residence of Rathnakar Shetty in Kodange, and theft at yet another areca nut shop near darga in Kambalabettu.
The gang also struck at a house in Madiyala in Alike stealing cow from there and a similar offence at a house in Pelthinja in Alakemajalu. Bhushan said out of the above named accused, Bashir has 19 cases of vehicle thefts registered against him in different police stations in the district apart from cases in Manjeshwar and Kasargod police station. He was imprisoned for nearly18-months after being arrested in a case of sexually assaulting a minor in a case in Vittal PS limits.
Noting that Bashir was released around seven months ago, Bhushan said Barik, a history sheeter in Vittal PS, was also jailed in a case of attempt to murder. Jabir is an accused in cases of vehicle theft in Manjeshwar PS limits, SP said adding police have successfully detected all eight cases of cattle theft and poisoning of pet dogs reported in Vittal PS limits leading to scare among people, with these arrests. The department also announced a reward of Rs 10000 to the team.
