Chikkamagaluru, Jul 25: A Dalit family that was attacked by a group of Bajrang Dal activists two weeks ago for consuming beef has said that they slaughtered a cow for food and not hurt anyone's sentiment.

Bajrang
Palaraj, a resident of Kunduru colony, said it was true that he had killed a cow for food. “But, is it right on the part of Bajrang Dal members to beat us black and blue. Is their act justified,” he sought to know.

He said that around 10.30 pm on July 10 when he was slaughtering a cow along with four youths, a gang of around 30 attacked them with lethal weapons.

“We did not slaughter human beings. We slaughtered a cow for food. Who gave them the authority to thrash us. We were attacked inhumanly in the presence of the police,” Palaraj said. He claimed that the cow was purchased from a certain Nagappa Gowda.

Acting on a tip-off from Bajrang Dal members, the Jayapura police had raided the house of Muttappa in Shanthipura colony in Koppa taluk on the night of July 10 and seized around 60 kg beef.

Palaraj, Muttappa and Dhanush were arrested from the spot while Sandeep and Ramesh managed to flee. The Koppa court had granted bail to the arrested. Palaraj, who got himself admitted at the government hospital in Koppa, had alleged that he was thrashed by Bajrang Dal members.

Meanwhile, Sunanda, the mother of another suspect Muttappa, had lodged a complaint against seven persons accusing them of barging into her house and abusing her caste.

All the seven obtained bail from the Koppa court on July 13. Annu, a resident of Jayapura, claimed that they had not assaulted anyone and that the cow was stolen for slaughter. The incident has sparked protests by progressive organisations and right-wing groups.

There is a Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Cattle Preservation Act, 1964 in force in Karnataka, Section 4 of which lays down: \4. Prohibition of Slaughter of Cow or Calf of She-buffalo:- Not withstanding any law, usage or custom to the contrary, no person shall slaughter or cause to be slaughtered, or offer or cause to be offered for slaughter or otherwise intentionally kill or offer or cause to be offered for killing any cow or calf of she-buffalo.\" The law is framed by Congress government four decades back and is very much in force. As such, what the dalits did was illegal - a crime - for which they are liable to 6 months imprisonment or fine or both. Well, that does not give license to vigilantes of any party or organization to take law into their own hands and beat them up either. The only course was to stop the killing if possible, or seize the slaughtered cow (carcass) etc. and hand over to the police. If the police do not act, then they could agitate in public, etc. So both parties are wrong on this occasion."

This is Karnataka not Gujurat. Strict punishment should be handed out to the perpetrators of such a heinous crime. As per the Constitution people are free to eat what they please. Why should the Bajrang Dal or anyone get offended if anybody eats beef.

Bengaluru: A red alert denoting severe heat wave has been issued for six districts of Karnataka by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), as temperatures are likely to cross 46 degrees Celsius.

Bagalkote, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Koppal districts will see temperatures ranging from 40 to 46 degrees Celsius between May 1 and May 9, according to KSNDMC.

The monitoring centre also pointed out that when comparing the maximum temperature recorded in Karnataka in the past seven years – between 2017 and 2024 – April 30, 2024 recorded the highest, 45.6 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, in a statement released by the India Meteorological Department in Bengaluru, the trough/wind discontinuity from southeast Madhya Pradesh to South Interior Karnataka (SIK), across Vidarbha, Marathawada and North Interior Karnataka (NIK) extending up to 1.5km above mean sea level persists.

But as per IMD, the department issued a severe heat (red) alert only when the actual maximum temperature crosses 47 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperatures are likely to continue and also be around 40 to 46 degrees Celsius over parts of NIK districts, such as Raichur, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Bellary and Vijayapura districts till May 6, the natural disaster management centre said on social media platform X.

The remaining NIK districts, most of the SIK districts and Dakshina Kannada district are likely to experience maximum temperature between 40 and 44 degrees Celsius, it added.

Parts of Kodagu, Udupi, Hassan, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and parts of Uttara Kannada districts are likely to experience between 33 and 40 degrees Celsius till May 6, according to the centre.

From May 7, maximum temperatures are likely to come down by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius across the state, according to KSNDMC.

Meanwhile, as per realised rainfall across the state data by KSNDMC, while isolated rains were observed in six districts -- Haveri, Dharwad, Gadag, Vijayapura, Shivamogga and Uttara Kannada -- dry/negligible rains were received in 25 districts, including Bengaluru rural and urban on April 30.

Maximum rainfall of 35mm was recorded at Bhogavi in Haveri district.

As per the cumulative date of rainfall from January 1 to April 30, only coastal Karnataka recorded an excess of 59% rainfall from usual, while the rest of Karnataka had deficit rainfall ranging from 13% to 80%, said a press release by KSNDMC, which compiles the data from telemetric rain gauge locations established by it across the state.

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.
