Transport employees strike continues, no solution in sight

July 26, 2016

Bengaluru, Jul 26: Normal life was affected across Karnataka for the second consecutive day today as there were no signs of a solution to the indefinite strike called by employees of four road transport corporations in the state.

More than one lakh employees' of the corporations are on strike since Sunday midnight with about 41 demands, prominent among them being a 35 per cent wage hike, while the government has offered a 10 per cent increase.

Though the unions and government have agreed to resolve most of the issues in the charter of demands in the days to come, the wage hike has remained a sticky point on which both sides have refused to budge.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said there was no chance of giving more than a 10 per cent hike as the corporations did not have the capacity to give more.

"We are not adamant nor is it a prestige issue for us. In the cabinet, we decided to give an eight per cent hike after our officials held several rounds of discussions with Union leaders. After that, I along with Ramalinga Reddy (transport minister) held meeting in which we told them we will give 10 per cent. They are not agreeing to it," he said.

"They should not be stubborn. Six crore people of Karnataka are facing difficulty. The government cannot fulfill all that they ask for. They are asking 30-35 per cent, we cannot give that much," he added.

The CM also appealed to employees to call off the strike and report for duty, keeping the public interest in mind.

Noting that pay revision happens once in four years, he pointed out that when it was revised in 2012, a 10 per cent rise was agreed upon and the same hike was being given now.

Stating that there should be capacity to pay according to the demand, he said the undertakings are running under loss. "But still, keeping employees' interest in mind, we have agreed to give a 10 per cent hike."

The Chief Minister also clarified that no decision has been taken on invoking the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on striking employees.

Sticking to their stand, employees unions have said they are open to discussions with the Chief Minister.

With state transport buses staying off roads, public are relying on private vehicles for commuting.

In Bengaluru, cabs and autorickshaws are in high demand and Metro services are running packed.

Schools and colleges in most parts of the state continued to remain shut due to the strike.
Overcharging by private transporters has become a common issue across the state, over which transport authorities have begun a crackdown.

Mangaluru, May 6: A five-year-old girl from Arendur village of Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) recently.

As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, where she failed to respond to the treatment and died on Friday night.

It is learned that the KFD is slowly spreading to the newer areas of coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

Mangaluru: This year too, the Mangaluru International Airport has missed being designated as an embarkation point for the annual hajj pilgrimage.

According to the Haj Committee of India, not many are choosing Mangaluru as an embarkation point. Last year, although Mangaluru was notified as one of the embarkation points, the Union government removed it from the list at the last minute.

Several associations and organisations submitted memorandums to the Haj Committee of India, requesting the reinstatement of Mangaluru as one of the embarkation points, but their efforts have not materialised this year either.

The use of Mangaluru Airport as an embarkation point for the haj began in 2010. In 2019, 1,400 haj pilgrims flew from MIA to Saudi Arabia.

“When the number is less, it is difficult to consider it. It was the same issue as last year,” reacted AP Abdullakutty, chairman of the Haj Committee of India.
Mangaluru as an embarkation point served people from undivided Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru districts.
Last year, the Muslim Central Committee of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts submitted a memorandum to Abdullakutty. They expressed their disappointment with Abdullakutty and stated that Mangaluru had a good number of applicants ever since it was identified as an embarkation point.
Now, they have to travel to Bengaluru.

UT Khader, speaker of the Karnataka legislative assembly, pointed out that several Union ministries are involved in the process of designating embarkation points for the haj.

“We are not sure why MIA as an embarkation point was removed. Is it because of fewer applications, or are airlines not willing to bid for MIA as an embarkation point? Is it only an issue with MIA as an embarkation point, or are there other airports in the country facing similar issues? We will try to find out and seek answers. Meanwhile, we will also start working at the earliest so that MIA is considered as an embarkation point for hajj next year,” said Khader.

Mangaluru, May 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation will resort to water rationing from May 5 as the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, is facing a shortage in water storage.

Instead of daily supply, water will be supplied on alternate days, the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) at the corporation said in a release.

The release said that water will be supplied to Mangaluru City North on May 5. There will be no water supply to Mangaluru City North on May 6. Instead water will be supplied to Mangaluru City South on May 6. Likewise the supply on alternate days will continue.

The inflow in the Netravathi has stopped, the release said, requesting people to cooperate with the corporation and not waste water for washing vehicles and other purposes.

An engineer at the corporation said that water level at the dam stood at 4.27 m on Wednesday against the full storage level of 6 m. If water is supplied daily to the entire city (Mangaluru City North and Mangaluru City South) the existing storage will last only for 16 days, the engineer said. Hence the decision to supply water on alternate days has been taken to supply water till May-end.
