PM can't intervene in inter-state water dispute, says BJP

July 29, 2016

Bengaluru, Jul 29: The state BJP?on Thursday said that Prime Minister cannot intervene in an inter-state water dispute unless the riparian states come to a consensus and agree to sit across the table to resolve the dispute.

BJP
The BJP's defensive stand come at a time when there is a feeling among the agitating people of North Karnataka that the state would have got its due share of the Mahadayi waters had Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened and resolved the issue.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jagadish?Shettar said the state government should focus on fighting the legal battle on the Mahadayi dispute rather then seeking Prime Minister's intervention.

“The government is trying to give the entire issue a political angle by putting the blame on the Prime Minister. The government wanted the Prime Minister?to intervene even when the Tribunal proceedings were on. The government failed to make proper submission before the Tribunal resulting in a setback to the state,” the BJP?leader said.

The Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal on Wednesday rejected the state's plea seeking permission to utilise 7 tmcft from the Mahadayi river.

BJP?legislator and former Water Resources Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the Tribunal order is full of flaws. The government should file a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court to challenge the order. The Tribunal has erred as it had not considered the assessment done by the Central?Water Commission on water yield in the Mahadayi river. Besides, the state had applied for necessary environment clearances to build barrages across Kalasa and Banduri, the two tributaries of the Mahadayi river, to divert 7 tmcft to the Malaprabha river. This aspect had not been considered by the Tribunal, he said.

“All doors are not closed as the Tribunal is yet to pronounce its final award,” Bommai said.

Speaker's view

Speaker K?B?Koliwad felt that intervention by the Prime Minister had become the need of the hour. “The Congress, the BJP and the JD(S) should forget their political differences and work towards the welfare of the people,” he said.

Koliwad, MLA from Ranabennur in the North Karnataka district of Haveri, said it would be easier for Modi to convince the Goa and Maharashtra governments for an out-of-tribunal settlement to resolve the dispute as the BJP was in power in these two states.

Modi should step in: Navalgund MLA

At a time when Navalgund in Dharwad district was burning on Thursday with people taking to the streets over the Mahadayi issue, Navalgund MLA N?H?Konaraddi of the JD(S) was busy addressing a press conference in?Bengaluru.

Konaraddi said intervention by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the only way justice could be rendered to the people of North Karnataka. “Filing an appeal before the Tribunal or approaching the Supreme Court will only further delay the people of north Karnataka getting their due share of the Mahadayi waters,” the MLA said. He said all the MPs from the state should take up the issue with the Prime Minister at the earliest.

Bengaluru, Mar 19: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday said that the Congress will split in three months after the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and its impact will be visible on the Siddaramaiah-led state government.

"Due to internal squabbles, the state government will not last long," the BJP leader said.

Talking to reporters on Monday, he said the sitting MP from the Gadag-Haveri constituency, Shivakumar Udasi, has done a lot of development work and implemented the Central government's schemes effectively.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi will surely become the PM for the third time. The overall response has been good in the Gadag-Haveri Lok Sabha constituency," the former Karnataka chief minister said.

Asked if he was contesting the election in a half-hearted manner in the Gadag-Haveri seat, Bommai said "such a question does not arise when the party's high command gives instructions".

He said he would respect his opponent and not take anyone lightly.

An Indian expatriate, hailing from Dakshina Kannada district in Karnataka, who was detained in Jeddah jail in an alleged cyber case, was set free recently. He is allowed to continue his work in the same company.

The 49-year-old Mangalurean, has been working for a Maintenance company in Jeddah for more than 13 years. He is known for his efficiency and sincerity in the company with good experience in his field of work.

His company usually assigned him on duty in Jeddah sea port to take the delivery of the goods consigned to his company. As a part of his duty, he normally takes pictures of the goods before the transportation. He did the same in February 2023 too.

The security personnel informed the police about his act that amounts to be a violation of the port security rule. He was unaware of the rule as he was doing it normally in the port during the release of the goods. Since then, he was detained by the police on the charge of photographing inside the port premises. After more than 6 months detention, he was released and allowed to work in the same company.

The detainee’s brother based in Jeddah was constantly pursuing the case.

P A Hameed Padubidri, a pro-bono NRI lawyer and social worker based in Riyadh, extended his socio-humanitarian help in this case upon the request of his family and relatives.

He actively involved trying to set him free from the jail on humanitarian grounds with the coordination and help of the Consulate General of India (CGI) Jeddah. The CGI keenly followed up the case with the concerned Saudi authorities. He was released from the jail recently and shared his happiness with his family and thanked good samaritans.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: Former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader B S Yediyurappa was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act on Thursday for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor at his residence in Bengaluru last month.

Yediyurappa, 81, was booked after a woman lodged a complaint saying that she visited his residence on February 2 seeking justice in a rape case against her daughter and sought that a special investigation team (SIT) be formed to look into the case.

According to the first information report (FIR), Yediyurappa allegedly took the minor to a room, closed the door and sexually assaulted her. The woman further alleged in the FIR that when she confronted Yediyurappa, he said that he was checking if the girl was raped or not. Yediyurappa later allegedly apologised and asked the woman not to reveal the matter to anyone.

The Sadashivanagar police in Bengaluru have registered a case under Section 8 (commit sexual assault) of the Pocso Act and Section 354 (a) (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Reacting to the allegations, the former CM said that around one-and-a-half months ago, they (the victim and her mother) had come to his house seeking help and he had taken them inside.

“After listening to her, I called the city police commissioner B Dayananda over phone seeking to address her problem. Later, they spoke against me and I then suspected that there is some health problem with her. I sent them to city police commissioner’s office. I even gave her some money as they were in distress. I came to know that an FIR has been registered and will look into it. But this is what I get for helping someone,” he added.
