Mangaluru, Aug 24: A 23-year-old woman has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court here for murdering her husband two years ago.
The convict is Prashanti (23), widow of Harish Nayak, who lived in a rented accommodation in Hosahuklu in Venoor police station limits near Moodbidri on the outskirts of the city.
Prashanti and Harish Nayak had fallen in love and to married. The police said that the two had frequent quarrels and Prashanti was fed up with her husband's conduct.
On June 20, 2014 Prashanti strangled her husband when he was asleep. She called Harish Nayak's sister Sharada saying that her husband won't wake up. On the complaint of Sharada, the Venoor police arrested Prashanti. Inspector B.R. Lingappa filed the charge-sheet.
While ordering life imprisonment, the Principal District and Sessions Judge K.S. Bilagi ordered Prashanti to pay a fine of Rs. 1 lakh. Of this fine amount, Rs. 98,000 should be paid to the three-year-old child of Prashanti and Harish Nayak.
The District Legal Services Authority has been directed to pay compensation to the child under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme. Public Prosecutor Pushparaj Adhyantaya examined 17 witnesses.
