Mangaluru, Sep 11: Two weeks after multiple complaints were lodged against derogatory Facebook posts on Sri Durga Parameshwari of Kateel and other Hindu gods, the Mangaluru city police have detained a person from Chikkamagaluru.
However, the police have failed to trace the main accused, who had used a fake Facebook profile, 'Jabbar BC Road', to post derogatory comments. The police believe that he is from Dakshina Kannada and staying in a Gulf country.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhaer, who is personally overseeing the investigation in to the case, on Saturday told media persons that Facebook was not sharing vital information about the derogatory posts.
These derogatory posts were posted on a social media site in October 2015 and were widely circulated. The Bantwal police registered a suo motu case that was followed by a case registered by the Mangaluru North police. A special city police team was set up to find the alleged perpetrators.
“We have secured a person, who is said to be linked with those allegedly involved in posting the posts on the social media network. However, officials from the Facebook are not providing the IP addresses from which the posts were sent. These details are necessary piece of evidence against the perpetrators, he said.
Mr. Sekhar said the investigation officer has sent a final reminder to the site's officials. “If they do not respond, we will approach the court and other official channels to get information we want,” he said.
