Mangaluru/Mysuru, Sep 26: The two prominent cities of Karnataka – Mysuru and Mangaluru – have been crowned the "first cities free of open defecation" in the country in the categories of million-plus population and below 5 lakh-population, respectively.
The announcement was made by the Quality Council of India (QCI). Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present the award at a function in New Delhi on September 30.
Mangaluru Mayor K Harinath said, “I am happy that the city has got the distinction in such a short time. The city has been identified as the first open defecation free city with a population of under 5 lakh.”
Mysuru emerged victorious from among 75 cities that also included state capitals. Vijayawada and Mysuru were in competition for the numero uno position and ultimately, Mysuru the cleanest city of the country, clinched the award, said mayor B L Byrappa.
The Mysuru mayor said for a city to become open defecation-free, a robust process was adopted. It included all the wards of the city officially declaring themselves open defecation-free through the ward corporator.
Simultaneously, a declarations from head of schools was undertaken stating that the staff and students along with their family members use toilets at home/community toilets for defecation. The mayor and commissioner made a declaration that the city is open defecation-free. After that, a third party field level inspection was conducted by QCI.
