Mangaluru is the third city in the State after Udupi and Mysuru to get this tag. The certificate is valid for six months from September 24. Referring to the validity of the certificate, Abhinav Yadav, Project Manager, QCI, said, “It is to ensure that the city maintains the standards of cleanliness ... else the certificate will become invalid. It keeps pressure on the civic body to sustain the cleanliness.”

The Council was given the responsibility of inspecting the facilities to check open defecation, added Yadav, reminding that re-survey will be conducted after a period of six months. Explaining the measures that helped in addressing the scourge of open defecation, Kavitha Sanil, chairperson of the Public Health and Education Standing Committee at MCC, said, “I got rid of the laborious procedures and considered the bank accounts of beneficiaries as the only criterion for building individual toilets. As a result, 339 applications for individual toilets were cleared in a speedy manner.”

MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer said, “The QCI team inspected various parts of the city from September 23 to 25 – including market areas and transit points – besides verifying the undertakings given by 287 schools, 280 self-help groups, 5,000 teachers and 67,000 students. As and when the opinions were collected, they were updated online.”

Mayor K Harinath said, “It is also time to recall the deeds of great leaders like B Basavalingappa and Blasius M D'Souza, who set an example in this regard. Basavalingappa, who was a minister in the cabinet of Chief Minister D Devaraj Urs, had banned the practice of carrying night soil. D'Souza, who was the president of the City Municipal Council for a long term, effectively implemented the order.”

Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel was happy to acknowledge that Mangaluru has been adjudged open defecation-free. Ivan D'Souza, Chief Whip of the state government in the Legislative Council, demanded building more pay and use toilets', as per the population of the city.

Mangaluru: After as the state health ministry issued guidelines to the public in view of a heatwave, the health department in Dakshina Kannada has advised people to be cautious about the impact of heatstroke, including heat rash, heat edema, heat cramps, heat tetany, heat syncope, and heat exhaustion.

Dakshina Kannada district nodal officer for climate change, Dr Naveenchandra Kulal, said that the impact of heat-related illness can also be found in the district, when there is a variation of about 4.5⁰C from the normal temperature.

Dr Kulal told media persons here on Friday, that the impact of heat-related illness is not confined to Raichur, Kalaburagi, and other North Karnataka districts.

“Those who reside inside tin sheet houses and closed environments are likely to suffer from heatstroke. People should hydrate themselves by drinking more water and avoid working under the direct Sun. Heat exhaust fans can be used. Though no heatstroke cases have been reported in the district, any negligence may cause heatstroke,” he said.

DHO Dr Thimmaiah HR said that hotels and restaurants should supply boiled water, and they should clean the overhead tanks once every three months. The filter of drinking water units should be cleaned frequently, he said.

He also directed paying guest accommodations to supply fresh food to inmates.

“We have received complaints of many paying guest accommodations serving sambar cooked the previous day to inmates. Stale food should be avoided, as there are chances of food contamination. Plastics should be avoided while packing food in hotels. As per the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines, the use of plastic to pack hot food is restricted,” the DHO said.
