Bengaluru, Jan 11: Samaj Parivartana Samudaya (SPS) on Tuesday raised theconflict of interest' angle in the state government's recommendation of Justice P Vishwanath Shetty's name for the post of Lokayukta.

In a memorandum to Governor Vajubhai Vala, SPS said Justice Shetty had appeared for former minister Gali Janardhana Reddy before the Supreme Court in the sensationalcash for bail' scam.

The NGO has said that Justice Shetty had also appeared in the Supreme Court as a senior advocate for Energy Minister D K Shivakumar in his petition seeking quashing of the Lokayukta police chargesheet.

“It is pertinent to mention here that the consideration of Justice Vishwanath Shetty's name for the post of Lokayukta was not discussed semantically. For, Justice Shetty as a senior counsel in the Supreme Court, has been actively associated with politicians accused of serious cases of corruption. Besides, Justice Shetty has had a long association and background of working for Gali Janardhana Reddy and D K Shivakumar in important cases before the Supreme Court.

Both these cases are still pending before the Supreme Court and some other cases against the same accused are pending before the institution of Lokayukta, Lokayukta police and Lokayukta courts. Now, if appointed as Lokayukta, Justice Shetty will have to fight against the same persons. Which poses a serious conflict of interest,” the memorandum stated. The memorandum has attached documents to substantiate these submissions.

Besides the allotment of a site measuring 9,600 sq ft in Judicial Layout in the name of Justice Shetty in violation of Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) allotment rules, SPS has alleged that Justice Shetty's son has purchased an upmarket apartment from a Cabinet minister in the state government. The memorandum states that Justice Shetty's son, Shashikiran Shetty, a senior advocate, “has purchased an apartment (No 22/A) measuring super built-up area of 2,865 sq ft at Cunningham Road from Water Resources Minister Mallana Goud Basavana Goud Patil (M B Patil) for a consideration amount of Rs 5.75 crore”.

“With the present serious crisis of confidence that this institution (Lokayukta) is facing in recent months, the public will be hesitant and wary of approaching the institution for addressing their grievances. Hence, under the circumstances, we humbly request you not to consider the recommendation until the enquiry into the properties and other matters relating to Justice Vishwanath Shetty and his family members are completed and his name is cleared,” the memorandum stated.

He was CM's choice: Shettar

Opposition party leaders can only suggest the names for the post of Lokayukta. However, it is the responsibility of the government to select the right candidate, said Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Jagadish Shettar.

Speaking to mediapersons on Tuesday, he said his party had suggested three names - Justices N K Patil, Anand Byra-reddy and P?Vishwanath Shetty - during the committee meeting chaired by the chief minister to select the candidate. However, it was Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who finalised the name of Justice Shetty, who is facing charges of obtaining a residential plot in Judicial Layout in Bengaluru by submitting a false affidavit.

“The provisions in the Lokayukta Act give powers to the Leaders of the Opposition in both Houses and the Chief Justice of the High Court only to suggest names. The final decision rests with the chief minister,” he said. Siddaramaiah said in New Delhi that Justice Shetty had denied all charges and he was the unanimous choice of the selection panel.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday attacked the BJP over the obscene video case in Hassan district by questioning who gave the accused Prajwal Revanna a visa to go abroad. He also hit out at Union Minister Amit Shah asking why did he gave a ticket to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal, who is the accused in the sex scandal case.

He alleged that former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda planned the escape of his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna abroad.

“Who gives passport and visa for travelling abroad? It’s the Centre. Can he go without the Centre’s knowledge? It was former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda who planned and sent him abroad,” the Chief Minister said.

"Prajwal pen drives case is not related to DCM DK Shivakumar. Why did Amit Shah give a ticket to the accused of a sex scandal?" he questioned.

Siddaramaiah also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to direct the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs to cancel the Diplomatic Passport issued to Prajwal Revanna and ensure his return to face the law.

Prajwal is accused in an alleged sex scandal which is under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Karnataka government. He is believed to have escaped to Germany shortly after polling in the first phase of elections in the state got over on April 26, in which Prajwal was the JD(S)-BJP combine's candidate from Hassan.

The Karnataka CM said that SIT will conduct an investigation in a transparent manner in the case.

Earlier, Siddaramaiah wrote on X, "The government has decided to form a special investigation team in connection with Prajwal Revanna's obscene video case. Obscene video clips are circulating in Hassan district, where it appears that women have been sexually assaulted."

Bengaluru, May 2: Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, was issued fresh summons on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is investigating the case of obscene videos involving the former JD(S) member, several news outlets reported.

The SIT also junked his appeal which sought seven days time to join the probe, as per these reports.

Prajwal and his father, H D Revanna, have sexual harassment and stalking cases filed against them over the matter. Gowda's son, H D Revanna, however, said that what took place '4-5 years ago' is now being turned into a legal case.

JD(S) in its core committee meeting suspended Prajwal from the party till the end of the probe. Prajwal, meanwhile, took to X to state he would join the probe in seven days time, asserting 'truth will prevail'.

Israeli military aircraft have heavily bombed the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip accompanied with ground advances shortly after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas said it had agreed to a proposal on ceasefire in Gaza.

A Palestinian journalist reported flares in the night sky, while locals said dozens of reconnaissance drones flew overhead.

The official Palestinian news agency Wafa and Egyptian media said Israeli military vehicles advanced towards the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing with Egypt, as well as the Karem Shalom crossing with the Israeli-occupied territories.

A Palestinian security official and an Egyptian authority have told the Associated Press news agency that Israeli tanks have entered Rafah, reaching as close as 200 meters from Rafah’s border crossing with neighboring Egypt.

The Israeli military has said it was conducting “targeted strikes” against Hamas in eastern Rafah.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has also said "Israel is continuing the operation in Rafah to exert military pressure on Hamas" in order to advance the release of captives and what it called "the other objectives of the war."

In the meantime, it described the proposal on ceasefire as "far from Israel's essential demands," but added that it would send negotiators for talks "to exhaust the potential for arriving at an agreement."

The military strikes on Rafah came ahead of talks in Egypt on Tuesday aimed at sealing a truce proposal accepted by Hamas, which was put forward by Qatari and Egyptian mediators.

According to a copy of the proposal, there will be three phases to ending Israel’s onslaught against Gaza.

The first phase calls for a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Netzarim corridor and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes. The second phase involves an announcement of a permanent cessation of military operations. In the last phase, there would be a complete end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip.

In return, Israel would be required to release an unspecified number of Palestinian prisoners, withdraw its troops from certain regions of the Gaza Strip, and allow Palestinians to travel from the south of the coastal sliver to the north.

About 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, once designated a “safe zone” by the Israeli military. Palestinians are now struggling to evacuate the city, after the Israeli military dropped leaflets ordering them to leave as a large-scale assault on the city is planned.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that a ground invasion of Rafah would be “intolerable” and called on Israel and Hamas “to go an extra mile” to reach a truce deal.

“This is an opportunity that cannot be missed, and a ground invasion in Rafah would be intolerable because of its devastating humanitarian consequences, and because of its destabilizing impact in the region,” Guterres told reporters on Monday ahead of a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in New York.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has also warned that Israel is “jeopardizing the deal by bombing Rafah.”
