Mangaluru, Feb 9: A major gold smuggling racket that lured international air passengers to smuggle gold using ingenious means to hoodwink scanning machines of Customs at Mangaluru International Airport, has been busted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI).

airport
Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI said that their sleuths managed to arrest two international passengers who landed in the city on Wednesday.

Based on tip off that a carrier had landed at MIA from Dubai, DRI sleuths rushed to Mahavir (Pumpwell) Circle. Even as they waited, a Maruti Suzuki Alto Car came in at high speed around 9.45am and stopped next to IOC petrol bunk.

Another person waiting nearby, apparently arrival of this car went towards the vehicle and there was some negotiations were between the person in the vehicle and the other man who was waiting for him.

DRI sleuths on strong suspicion surrounded and intercepted the duo. Preliminary enquiries revealed that the person who arrived in the car happened to be an international passenger Haris Panalam Mohammed Kunhi, who had just arrived from Dubai. After coming out of MIA, Haris had directly come to Pumpwell circle. Even the baggage tags were intact on the carton boxes which were kept on the rear seat of the car.

The other person waiting for Haris was Faisal. Since they had no reasonable explanation about business being transacted by them at the said place, they were brought to DRI office for further enquiry.

On examination of contents of baggage of Haris, it was found that gold was concealed inside a portable wireless amplifier. Detailed examination and testing resulted in the recovery and seizure of 698.2 grams of 24 carat gold plates of foreign origin valued at Rs 20,24,780.

It was found that the smugglers in an attempt to avoid detection during Customs check at MIA had melted and molded the gold into thin plates and then cut them into the shapes of letter 'E' and 'I'. These 'E' and 'I' shaped gold plates were then coated with mercury and tightly packed to fit into the transformer (coil) portion of the amplifier, Vinayak Bhat said.

During the course of investigation, Haris and Faisal admitted to the offence of smuggling gold and receiving the same. Haris told the investigators he agreed to carry the portable amplifier having gold plates concealed inside it for the lure of money and free air tickets from Dubai to Mangaluru. After getting cleared from the airport, he had instructions to hand it over to Faisal who would be waiting near Pumpwell circle, as per the prior arrangement.

Faisal admitted he was involved in similar smuggling operations on earlier occasions and used to earn commission for his job of taking delivery of the smuggled gold and carrying it neighbouring Kasargod where it would once again switch hands and through another agent reach the kingpin of the racket. The duo were arrested under section 104 of the Customs Act 1962 and produced before CJM, Mangaluru who remanded them to ten days of judicial custody.

Though, the arrests have put a temporary brake on smuggling operations, they are likely to revive after few days of lull unless the key members of the gang are apprehended, Vinayak Bhat said adding all out efforts are being made and the investigation has been intensified to reach the top rung operators of the smuggling racket. It may be added here that Customs officials recently too had seized gold that was attempted to be smuggled in a similar manner.

Bengaluru: Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday slammed Rahul Gandhi’s "wealth redistribution promise", stating that only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like that.

“He is dreaming of a revolution. By talking about wealth redistribution, Rahul Gandhi has insulted and humiliated two Congress Prime Ministers who brought market reforms and increased the wealth of the nation,” he added, recalling the contribution of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh in economic liberalisation.

Accusing Gandhi of indirectly trying to say that what the two Congress Prime Ministers did was wrong, Gowda said, "He (Rahul Gandhi) has torn up their economic reforms like he had torn up an ordinance (which sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs) issued by (the then) Manmohan Singh (government)."

The 90-year-old JD(S) supremo ridiculed the Congress manifesto claiming that only a party that is sure of never coming to power can make as many promises.

“The Congress has promised so many things in its manifesto. The only party that is very sure of never coming to power will promise so much,” Gowda said at a press conference here.

He said the Congress wants to turn this country 'upside down' and the promises made by it indicated that it wants to come to power 'at any cost'.

“Rahul Gandhi wants to do a wealth survey and distribute the wealth. Does he think he is a mass leader,” Deve Gowda said.

Picking up points from the Congress manifesto ‘Nyay Patra’, Gowda said Rahul Gandhi wants to 'give 30 lakh new central government jobs and run this country'.

“There are only 40 lakh sanctioned jobs. How can he create 30 lakh more jobs overnight? How much will he pay these people? Where will he employ them,” he asked.

“Only someone with no practical knowledge can speak like this. (P) Chidambaram was the manifesto committee chairman. Does he agree with Rahul Gandhi’s immature economic ideas,” Gowda said.

Guwahati: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday condemned the alleged sexual abuse of women involving Lok Sabha MP Prajwal Revanna, asserting that the BJP will not tolerate any insult to women.

Revanna (33) is the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate for Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, which went to polls on April 26.

Earlier in the day, the JD(S) suspended Revanna from the party with immediate effect.

“The issue regarding Revanna that has been reported in the media is very hurtful and cannot be tolerated in any way,” Shah told a press conference here.

“The BJP’s stand is very clear; we will not tolerate any insult to ‘matri aur nari shakti’ (women empowerment),” he asserted.

Some explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, were circulated in Hassan over the last few days.

The home minister said Congress has been alleging that an NDA partner’s candidate is involved in the incident, “but I just want to ask a small question - whose government is there in that state (Karnataka)?”

“The Congress is in power in Karnataka, and this matter must have come to their attention. Why has it not taken any action on it so far? We cannot take any action as law and order is a state issue,” Shah said.

Mangaluru: The passenger vessel service between Lakshadweep and Mangaluru has recommenced operations with the arrival of Parali, a high-speed craft, at the Old Mangaluru Port on Thursday, May 2

With 160 passengers on board, along with a pilot, a ship engineer, an assistant, and eight labourers, the arrival of the vessel brings hopes of reinstating this vital transportation link.

The passengers were welcomed by Congress brass. The vessels that used to arrive before the Covid-19 pandemic took 13 hours to reach Mangaluru from Lakshadweep. However, the introduction of the high-speed craft, Parali, has reduced the travel time to approximately seven hours, said Abubakar Ashraf Bengre.

Bengre is part of a team that has been instrumental in liaising with the authorities of both Lakshadweep and Karnataka to facilitate the revival of this service. He told reporters that the service would bring better economic activity to Mangaluru.

Over recent months, discussions have been held with Hamdullah Sayeed, president, Lakshadweep Congress Committee, as well as Karnataka Speaker UT Khader and district minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, to garner support for the reintroduction of the service.

The passengers who arrived mostly sought medical treatment, went shopping or met relatives here. They said that they traveled for Rs 450. Former MLA J R Lobo said that they will urge the government to ensure regular vessel services continue.

The passenger service was discontinued due to a lack of demand, it is learnt. In the year 2018-19, 4,955 passengers embarked and 7,422 disembarked from the Old Mangaluru Port. Subsequently, the figures declined to 3,779 (embarked) and 2,294 (disembarked) in 2019-20. The numbers further plummeted to 561 (embarked) and 19 (disembarked) in 2020-21, leading to the suspension of the service.

At present, the administration of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep has released a schedule for high-speed craft movement from April 29 to May 5.
