The Government Central Model Higher Primary School building in Koppal, about 400km from Bengaluru, is ready to crumble anytime. The 50-year-old building that hasn't seen repair or maintenance in years, houses 480 students from classes I to VIII in 12 rooms, besides staffrooms and administrative blocks.

The roof of the passage crashed, and concrete blocks landed right in front of classrooms. Besides, the headmaster's room also collapsed.

According to sources, this is not an isolated incident as the roof of some classrooms and office room came crashing down about six months ago.

School principal Beerappa Andagi said: "The building has developed cracks. Cement layers from the roofs are coming off every day in all parts of the school building.I shudder to think of the day this structure collapses."

This is the only government school in Koppal. Its 19 teachers and students are on high alert about the condition of the building. A teacher said most students keep a watchful eye on the roof and walls even as they are busy scribbling down notes. District education officers led by the deputy director of public instruction and block education officer have visited the spot. But they haven't taken tangible measures to shift the school to a safe building, the principal said.

Koppal block education officer Umesh Pujar admitted the building was sitting precariously , but played the turf card about maintenance."The building doesn't come under the education department; it's under the tahsildar's jurisdiction.Repairs or renovation has to be carried out by the tahsildar. We've sought a fund of Rs 2.5 lakh under the Sarva Shikshan Abhiyan to repair the building; the fund may come only in June. I will inspect the school again and suggest remedies," he said. Science teacher Ambakka Jantli suffered head injury when a block of roof landed on her some days ago. "I'm worried about our students' safety ," she added.

Given the condition of the building, some parents have asked their children not to attend classes until safety measures are put in place. Gangamma Totad, a teacher, said many parents were not sending their wards to the school. A class VIII student, Ningappa Madiwal, has been asked by his parents to "forget school" till the building is repaired and declared safe.

Aishwarya Halli, another student, has sought permission from the school to allow her to study at home and directly appear for exams starting in March.

Mangaluru, May 3: The Mangaluru City Corporation will resort to water rationing from May 5 as the Thumbe vented dam, which supplies drinking water to the city, is facing a shortage in water storage.

Instead of daily supply, water will be supplied on alternate days, the Executive Engineer (Water Supply) at the corporation said in a release.

The release said that water will be supplied to Mangaluru City North on May 5. There will be no water supply to Mangaluru City North on May 6. Instead water will be supplied to Mangaluru City South on May 6. Likewise the supply on alternate days will continue.

The inflow in the Netravathi has stopped, the release said, requesting people to cooperate with the corporation and not waste water for washing vehicles and other purposes.

An engineer at the corporation said that water level at the dam stood at 4.27 m on Wednesday against the full storage level of 6 m. If water is supplied daily to the entire city (Mangaluru City North and Mangaluru City South) the existing storage will last only for 16 days, the engineer said. Hence the decision to supply water on alternate days has been taken to supply water till May-end.

devaraje gowda.jpg

In a fresh claim, arrested BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda has alleged that Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and four other ministers were behind exposing Prajwal Revanna’s sex scam that has brought disgrace to Janata Dal (Secular) H D Deve Gowda family.

Devaraje Gowda has been arrested in a sexual abuse case.

Speaking to reporters while being taken to the district prisons, in Hassan on Friday, Gowda alleged that he was offered Rs 100 crore to drag the name of H D Kumaraswamy in the Prajwal’s case.

“D K Shivakumar had offered me Rs 100 crore to project that H D Kumaraswamy was behind the case. The offer was made through ministers N Chaluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda, Priyank Kharge and another minister. They had even sent Rs 5 crore as advance to Bowring Club. But I did not agree. Hence, they hatched a plot to trap me,” Gowda alleged.

“It is D K Shivakumar, who collected all information from Prajwal Revanna’s former car driver Karthik and readied the pen drive. A team of four ministers were formed to handle the issue. As I did not agree to the plan. They planned to bring disrepute to the BJP, Narendra Modi and H D Kumaraswamy,” he said.

Gowda further alleged that former MLC M A Gopalaswamy of Channarayapatna was sent to him for negotiation.

“The main intention of D K Shivakumar is to bring disrepute to Modi and BJP in the case. Besides, he wanted to defame H D Kumaraswamy’s leadership in the state” he claimed. “They filed a sexual harassment and rape case against me, but found no evidence. Now, they are trying to fix me in the pen drive case” he alleged.
