Mangaluru, Mar 17: Police have increased the security cover for rationalist and human rights activist Narendra Nayak after an alleged murder attempt by unknown miscreants near his house two days ago.
In a complaint filed with the Urwa police here on Wednesday, Mr. Nayak said at about 7 a.m. two motorbike-borne men came close to his car as he was approaching Lalbagh Road, and indicated that one of the tyres was punctured.
He alleged that it was an attempt by the miscreants to make him alight from the car in order to attack him. He drove away without stopping, he said.
Mr. Nayak said the manner in which the motorbike-borne men approached him, indicated that they planned to harm him. It could be recalled here that Vinayak Baliga was also murdered by the miscreants in March 2016 near his house in the city.
Baliga, an electrical contractor and RTI activist, had unearthed controversial information related to electricity theft and unauthorised constructions in Mangaluru city.
Mr Nayak, currently the president of Federation of Indian Rationalist Association, was trolled on social media platforms for his efforts to speak out against the murder. Following the alleged threats, the police had provided Mr. Nayak a personal security officer.
Now, after the complaint lodged on Wednesday, Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar has increased the security cover, with an additional person deputed on duty. Mr. Sekhar said Mr. Nayak’s complaint was being investigated by the Central Crime Branch.
