Mangaluru, Mar 25: A fair price shop run by Naguri Vyavasaya Sahakari Sangha Shaktinagar branch in Mangaluru taluk lost its licence after a poor woman complained against it to a state minister for not issuing rice to her under the 'Anna Bhagya' for the month of March.
The woman, a BPL card holder, had been to the fair price shop on March 23. The staff at the shop refused to give rice under 'Anna Bhagya' scheme and asked her to visit in April.
The helpless woman, after returning home, decided to call U T Khader, the minister for food, civil supplies and consumer affairs, who at a public programme in Mangaluru recently had said that he would be available on phone anytime for the common people.
She told Mr Khader that the shopkeeper did not listen to her when she questioned about violation of the government order that mandates continuous distribution of food grains till the end of the month. She also made mention about similar experiences she had in the past.
Responding to the woman's complaint immediately, Mr Khader directed department deputy director A T Jayappa to conduct an inquiry. Mr Jayappa, who gave a surprise visit to the fair price shop, found that it had violated rules by not distributing rice under Anna Bhagya to many other BPL card holders as well.
Based on the detailed report submitted by the officer, Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Dr K G Jagadish directed the department of food, civil supplies and consumer affairs to cancel the licence of the particular fair price shop with immediate effect.
