Mangaluru, Mar 27: In an apparent attempt to trigger unrest in Ullal area of Mangaluru taluk, two motorbike-borne miscreants, suspected to be saffron activists, brutally attacked a Muslim youth near a mosque at Kodi near Ullal last night.
Naushad Husain (23), a resident of Kodi, who survived the murder attempt, was rushed to a hospital for treatment by patrolling police. Security has been intensified in Ullal area after the incident.
According to sources, Naushad was on his way to a samosa manufacturing unit at Mukkacherry. His two-wheeler was waylaid near Rahmaniya mosque by the two miscreants who came on a motorbike.
Within seconds after Naushad stopped his motorbike, the miscreants attacked him with a sword. Though they tried to chop Naushad’s neck, he held his hand as a shield. His hand got partially chopped and he collapsed on the spot.
When Naushad began to scream, the miscreants fled the spot. Soon, police personnel who were on patrol in the area reached the spot. However, they could not catch the assailants.
It is learnt that a local resident, identified as Fairoz, who was returning home in his car, witnessed the incident.
It is suspected that Ramith from Mogaveerapatna and Ramith from Ullal who were released on bail on March 25 could have conspired to kill Naushad. They were arrested by the police for their role in the murder attempt on Ibrahim Nasfan.
Mangaluru city police commissioner M Chandra Shekar, DCPs Shantharaju and Sanjeev Patil, ACP Shruthi conducted the spot investigation.
