Bengaluru, Apr 10: As many as 175 of the 341 passports belonging to various African nationals and visa documents issued by India, which were seized by the Central Crime Branch during a recent raid on an electronics shop in Banaswadi, are invalid. They had not been renewed before the date of expiry.

The travel documents were seized from the shop of Muniraju (45) on HRBR Road. They belong to African nationals, mostly students, from Namibia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. Around 50% of the passports belong to citizens from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, said the police. In all, police found 341 passports, 83 residential permits, 93 laptops, 155 mobile phones, four two-wheelers and seven four-wheelers.

“It appears that Muniraju had taken them as collateral for lending money,” said a senior police officer investigating the case. “This means about 175 African nationals are overstaying in the country. However, since we do not have a proper database of the students, we have asked the deputy commissioners in Bengaluru to identity and track the owners of the passports,” added the officer.

The police will also be writing to the respective embassies seeking information about the passports-holders.

“Deporting them alone will not solve the problem. We need to find out the reasons for them overstaying,” said a senior police officer.

The All Africa Students’ Association Bengaluru is helping the police in identifying the passport-holders.

But, even as the police are cracking down on African students overstaying in the city, the Association will be petitioning the State and central governments seeking a probe into the reasons for students overstaying in the country, especially Bengaluru.

“Multiple factors contribute to this, starting with cheating by agents back in the student’s home town in Africa,” explained Bosco Kaweesi, legal adviser, All Africa Students’ Association Bengaluru.

According to him, the agents take money from parents and provide their children with a provisional admission certificate. “But upon reaching the respective Indian college, the management claims that the agent has not sent them the money and his/her passport is withheld by the educational institution,” he explained.

Besides, upon reaching the college, some students are asked to pay double the fees than what is told to them by the agent in their home town.

According to another member of the association, “There have been instances where the students have been asked to pay $10,000 to pursue a course for a degree in commerce. A student, whose parents would have taken a loan to send him to India, is scared to go back and thus overstays.”

Sometimes, colleges don’t issue a bonafide certificate for visa extension unless the student pays the fee for the subsequent year.

“In some cases, landlords retain the passport of students,” Mr. Kaweesi said. “The issue of overstaying will not end unless the government conducts a detailed probe into such issues,” he said.

Karnataka Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayareddy has promised to look into the issue.

Madikeri: A 15-year-old was bludgeoned to death and the accused fled with her severed head at Mutlu village in Somwarpet of Kodagu district on Thursday late night, hours after her SSLC examination result was declared.

The victim has been identified as US Meena, a 10th grade student of Surlabbi High School. She had passed the SSLC examination and her school attained 100% results.

However, she was brutally murdered by accused Prakash (32), a resident of the village. The police have launched a search operation to find the suspect, said Kodagu SP K Ramarajan

It is said that the minor girl's engagement with the suspect was thwarted by officials from Women and Child Development department on May 9, and later officials had even convinced her parents of not to marry the minor girl.

However, the suspect barged into her house in the night and allegedly kidnapped her. Later, he took her to an area near the periphery of the forest and murdered her after which he fled with her severed head.

Victim's mother too has suffered injuries and is admitted to a hospital for treatment. The reason for the murder will be known after the probing officials have inquired the victim's mother, said the SP.

dengue.jpg

Mangaluru, May 8: The health officials in Dakshina Kannada are concerned over the increase in dengue cases in the rural areas of the district. They've seen 108 cases since January, compared to 45 last year.

Dr. Naveen Chandra Kulal, who works on controlling diseases spread by insects, says humidity makes mosquitoes breed more.

People storing water in pots and drums during summer also make more mosquitoes, he added.

In Lingappayyakadu village near Mulky, a survey found people store lots of water because they don't have regular drinking water. Dr. Kulal says this water becomes a place for mosquitoes to breed if containers aren't closed properly.

Dengue cases are also rising in Bengaluru, Mysuru, and other districts, he said. Even though there haven't been big groups of dengue cases in Dakshina Kannada yet, the health department is trying hard to stop it from spreading. They're doing things like teaching people how to prevent dengue and getting rid of places where mosquitoes can breed.

So far this year, Dakshina Kannada district has only had 16 cases of malaria. Dr. Kulal says many of these cases were among workers who came from other states to work on building sites.

Dr. Thimmaiah HR, who works for the health department, says if people have a fever, they should go to the nearest clinic or hospital. He also says they should get tested if they have symptoms of dengue or malaria and be careful about the hot weather.

Karnataka: BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda was arrested in connection with a sex abuse video allegedly belonging to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna.

According to police, Devaraje Gowda was arrested at Gulihal tollgate by the Hiriyur police in this district on Friday night for leaking the video in a pen drive.

He was arrested on a tip-off received by the Hassan police, which wanted his presence for the case.

Several explicit videos involving Prajwal started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, which took place on April 26.

The MP, a grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, is absconding and a 'blue corner' notice has been issued against him by Interpol.

Three FIRs, including charges of rape, molestation, intimidation, blackmailing and threatening, have been registered against Prajwal.

Devaraje Gowda is accused of leaking these videos, which he has categorically rejected.

He contested in the 2023 Assembly elections against JD(S) MLA from Holenarasipura H D Revanna.

H D Revanna, father of Prajwal, is at present in jail on charges of kidnapping a woman, a mother of three.

Ahead of polls, Devaraje Gowda had warned BJP’s central leadership against backing Prajwal Revanna and brought his sex scandal to light.
