Sonu Nigam shaves off his head, insists that he is not anti-Muslim

E-mail Print PDF

Mumbai, Apr 19: Sonu Nigam, who created a storm with his tweets on the use of loudspeakers in morning prayers at mosques, addressed the media at his house to clear his stand over the issue. The singer also invited celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim to cut his hair, in response to a West Bengal cleric's fatwa offering Rs 10 lakhs to shave off Sonu's head.

The ace singer started off by saying that he didn't expect such a simple thing to become such a big topic of discussion. "I have considered Mohammed Rafi as my guru. My driver is a Muslim. I am not anti-Muslim, I consider myself secular," he said on him being labelled as anti-Muslim.

Sonu urged that "we need to be considerate with each other". He clarified that he's talking on the issue under a social context, and not a religious context.

On being asked why he was shaving his head, Sonu said, "It's not an agitation, not a challenge that I am throwing someone's way. I am shaving my head just to show that the person cutting my hair is a Muslim. It's all about interpreting things the right way. I exhort the media to present it like that and not in a confrontational way."

When analogies were drawn with his concerts using loudspeakers, the singer rebuked by saying that he sings only within the permissible time limits. Sonu also stated that "being secular doesn't mean we accept everything". Congress leader Ahmed Patel echoed Sonu's sentiments over the use of loudspeakers for Azaans in mosques. Sonu ended the interaction by quoting Ahmed Patel's remarks, "Azaan zaruri hai, loudspeaker nahi".

The singer then proceeded to have his head shaved at the hands of Aalim. Sonu emerged minutes later with a shaved head.

On Monday, Nigam blew up a controversy when he lashed out as "forced religiousness" in India after being woken up by the sound of the morning Aazaan from a mosque presumably near his home. "I don't believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity to wake up people who don't follow the religion. Why then..? Honest? True? Gundagardi hai bus."

He went on to tag Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to look into the matter.

"Dear Devendra Fadnavis please note and help us force police to act against illegal blaring of Azaan and other such activities," he added.

He was trolled by Twitteratti and organizations with protests and some planning to move court against him.

Sonu Nigam................ You know there are several mumbaikars who sleep and wake under NOISE POLLUTION. I am talking of those mumbaikars who stay near the Railway Track. 24/7 there is a noise around them and they never complaint about the irritation. Life means adjustment and the city like Mumbai where everybody adjust their life according to their convenience. When you purchased your Flat in Mumbai, then why didn't you check the surroundings whether there is Masjid, Temple, Church, Gurudvara and other several worship place. So, don't make unnecessary noise at twitter and be like a decent mumbaikar and don't poke your nose just to be a center of attraction in the social media. I was a huge fan of yours, but today I don't have any respect to you and I had boycotted and deleted all the songs from my music collection just because you had hurt the sentiment of highly respected religion. YOUR CAREER IS GOING TO END SOON.

Is it the issue on the use of mike or is it the issue of giving Azaan in public???
As per Sonu Nigam, he has problem with mike only. If it is so, then none can use mike in public places including political parties in public rallies, music concerts in public places, festival activities, mela etc. So the issue of giving Azaan using mikes is just a camouflage for achieving some ulterior motives and attention from ruling hard-line political outfits.

when u hear azan, u have to go and pray 5 times a day. and on time. god is controlling u.

but for some others. they can pray any where anytime. they are controlling god.

azan runs 24 hrs 365 days non stop. due to time difference in different town. city .country.

this is nothing but praising god.

using loud speaker for adhaan is not compulsory... usually masjids located in muslim dominated areas may use loudspeakers... i think muslims should avoid loud speakers in city areas , where even non muslims also live , nowadays tolerance level of people are exhausted , they even can not tolerate a minute of sound ... I am surprised how these people live in noisy city areas....

Some Hindu friends told me that because of Azan my life has changed.

I wake up early and do some yoga. And the day becomes longer.

I live double life. While some lazy people wakes in the afternoon. and for them life is short.

Mr.Ram George and other Hindus and Christians, it makes no difference for us whether Adhan is given over mic or without mic, what matters if a muslim gets up and prays on time or not. those who are making noise about it either fools or ignorant.

However, by banning we are not at loss, rather you hindus and christians are at loss, you can't play your suprabata, mantras and the church bell. so apna pair pe kuladi marna hai tho maro!!

As per your logic... On musical concert, let them sing without the mic and all that band disturbance..
Azan only less than 3 mints x 5 times in a day ... Atleast listen to your CREATOR's call to success... He has given you the intelligence and all that u guys have in your body which is functioning without any effect
(When we see the nerves system, we see it placed in our body perfectly without mixing just like the earphone cable which alwz mix)

I think those who oppose should read the QURAN the divine book ... It is upto U guys to accept it or not from the word of God... God has given you the free will to think and PONDER on his verses which is unchanged since its revelation... And its a challenge from ALLAH to create a similar book lyk it... (Many tried but failed and no one can ever do it till the day of judgement)

I think if U are against ISLAM then atleast U should know what is in the QURAN which is the source of ISLAM... With cheddi feeded media information U guys are like a play instrument to them ... Whenever cheddi media plays, U guys are dancing to the tunes..

Wake up guys and use ur intellect to know the REALITY and know our CREATOR of all that exists. Go and check the Source its free online.. No need to spend your money ... Work on your intellect which is a blessing from God.

see muslims talk about following constitution .SC is also constitutional body and SC has clearly directed not to put loudspeakers in the early morning . this community is taking everything for granted .this is causing massive polarisation .100 years were there any ludspeakers ? in 6th cetury ur prophet was he using louspeaker ? totally nonsense people . azaan is the biggest irritation .Govt should ban loudspeakers from 10pm to 7am .irrespective of all religion . impose penalty for violators .

For Sonu this is a simple matter, but Muslims, it is not....Azan is a call for prayer...it will help people to get up from the bed and do the prayer on time...timing is very important for prayer in Islam....cannot be taken for granted...

I think at some point of time Hindus will have to wake up and take a stand against this evil ideology.otherwise we will end up exterminating ourselves.i admire his courage and the way he took stand is commendable.more voices should come from every corner in support of him.

No need to apologize. Mr Nigam said the right thing. Those who worship on loud speakers are wrong and the maulvi who issued the fatwa is absolutely wrong. Muslims need to be saved from this kind of maulvis.

Sonu Nigam should feel lucky that he is living in BJP/Modi rule and hence is safe. If he could have said during anti-Hindu anti-India pro-Muslim and Pro-Pakistan Congress and its anti-National allies regime then he could have been in more trouble.

For praying purposes people built churches, mosques and temples. If people want to pray they can pray from the institutions. Outside, around the institution many people stay, for them it will be annoying for sure...

Dear Mr. Nigam,
Islam is totally different. It does not have any relation with Mohd Rafi or your muslim driver. It is purely based on Quran & Sunnah. So, do not study Islam by seeing muslim.

I agree with Sonu. If they want to pray... just pray 3 times or 5 times or as many times they want. But why using loudspeakers. Not only for Muslims. I am against Hindu temples using loudspeakers for same purposes such as playing devotional songs
