BJP identifies 120 ‘weak’ seats to ensure victory in 2019 LS polls

April 30, 2017

New Delhi, Apr 30: As part of its countrywide expansion plan, BJP has identified 120 Lok Sabha constituencies where the party hasn't done well in the past but is optimistic of turning the fortunes in 2019 elections. Party members will be asked to hold regular interactions with people to acquaint them with the party's ideology and also the achievements of Modi government.

Instead of being complacent after a string of electoral victories+ , the party thinktank is busy developing strategy to explore new territory, and thus, enhance prospects for 2019. "We can't claim to retain all the seats we had won in 2014. So exploring possibilities is pragmatic and viable," said a senior party leader, confident of the party putting up a good show in places in the south and eastern regions. He said the party will soon announce these 120 constituencies as it doesn't want to keep it a secret. "Party cadres will be assigned the task formally," he said.

While opposition parties are trying to stitch an alliance to contain BJP, the saffron party seems to be first off the block for the 2019 race, involving all ranks — from booth-level to national office-bearers. BJP president Amit Shah will tour five states — West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Lakshwadeep and Gujarat- for 95 days, an indication that bulk of the 120 seats could be in these states.

"The party president will visit these states twice till September holding interactions at booth level and also with intellectuals," said another party leader. The party has already expressed its aggressive strategy for West Bengal and Odisha, the two states where it has been very proactive in the recent past. Telangana is the new inclusion where party anticipates a better performance.

The party has evolved a multi-pronged strategy for the expansion involving around 3.5-lakh full-time workers, who will be active from 15 days to six months. These active members are expected to hold booth level interactions. "While the expansion bid is an ongoing process, we are also taking stock of the works accomplished since the tasks were assigned after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls," a senior party member said.

Bengaluru: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has detained two suspects in connection with the Rameshwaram Cafe blast case in Bengaluru, sources confirmed on Tuesday.

The preliminary probe has revealed that the two suspects were in direct contact with the suspected bomber.

The NIA sleuths have picked up the suspects from an area in the state capital. However, a statement is yet to be made by the NIA in this regard.

Even as the investigating agencies, both NIA and state special wing CCB teams have launched an extensive search operation in various states, the bomber has remained elusive. The authorities had obtained the bomber’s images and videos from CCTV footage on March 1, soon after the incident.

Sources said that the sleuths were suspecting that the bomber had come from Tamil Nadu and was staying in a neighbouring state for two months before carrying out the blast.

The hair samples of the accused were gathered from the hat of the accused which he abandoned in Bengaluru near a religious place. The authorities have sent the samples for the DNA testing and were hoping for a breakthrough.

The Rameshwaram Cafe bomb blast took place on March 1 on the International Technology Park Limited (ITPL) road in the Brookfield area. Low intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used to carry out the blast and nine persons were injured in the incident.

At least seven people have been killed when Israeli warplanes bombed an emergency center in southern Lebanon near the border with the 1948 Israeli-occupied territories with air-to-surface missiles, according to Lebanese security sources.

Two sources, speaking on condition of anonymity said early on Wednesday that the strike targeted the Islamic Group’s emergency and relief center in Lebanon’s southern village of Habbariyeh.

Jamaa Islamiya, a Lebanese group closely linked to the Gaza-based Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, said in a statement that “a number” of people had been killed, and called the strike a “heinous crime.”

An official from the group said “seven rescuers” were killed in the aerial assault.

Another Jamaa Islamiya official, also requesting anonymity, said a dozen medical staff were in the emergency center at the time of the strike, adding that bodies were being pulled from the rubble.

Lebanese lawmaker Hassan Mrad said “the Israeli aggression on Habbariyeh adds to the long list of Israeli crimes.”

Israel has been launching air strikes against Lebanon since the beginning of its onslaught against the Gaza Strip in early October.

An Israeli strike knocked down part of a building in the southern Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh on February 14, killing seven members of the same family, including a child, Lebanon’s official National News Agency said. A boy initially reported missing was found alive under the rubble.

In a separate Israeli attack, a woman and her two children were killed in the village of as-Sawana in southern Lebanon.

The Israeli regime launched its devastating hostilities in the Gaza Strip on October 7 after the territory’s Hamas-led Palestinian resistance groups carried out a surprise retaliatory attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, against the occupying entity.

Israel's raids have resulted in retaliatory strikes from Hezbollah in support of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

The movement has vowed to keep up its retaliatory operations as long as the Tel Aviv regime continues its onslaught on Gaza.

The Israeli campaign in Gaza has killed at least 32,414 people, most of them women and children. Another 74,787 individuals have also been wounded.
