Karnataka BJP infighting: Four party office bearers lose their posts

April 30, 2017

Bengaluru, Apr 30: Cracking down on the feuding factions of the party's Karnataka unit, the BJP central leadership has relieved two office bearers each from the state President BS Yeddyurappa and senior leader KS Eshwarappa camps, of their charges.

It also barred party members from participating in the activities of Rayanna Brigade, an apolitical forum of Dalits and backward classes floated by Eshwarappa in an apparent show of strength, and also asked them not to talk about party's internal affairs in public and in media.

The crackdown comes following a series of meetings held by BJP national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Muralidhar Rao with party leaders here yesterday and on Sunday.

The party's factional feud had intensified on April 27 with Eshwarappa holding a convention to "save" the organisation in defiance of the warnings by Yeddyurappa's camp against it.

In a late night move, state BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar announced that the state unit vice presidents, Bhanuprakash and Nirmal Kumar Surana, Raitha Morcha vice president MP Renukacharya and spokesperson G Madhusudhan have been relieved of their responsibilities to the party with immediate effect.

While Bhanuprakash and Surana had shared the stage with Eshwarappa at the convention, Renukacharya and G Madhusudhan considered close to Yeddyurappa had made public statements targeting national joint general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh.

Yeddyurappa has earlier too blamed Santhosh, perceived to hold significant sway over the party affairs in the state, for scripting dissidence activities.

After meetings with Muralidhar Rao, another BJP state general secretary Aravinda Limbavali today said the party's central leadership was closely observing the recent happenings in Karnataka unit.

Clarifying that there was no link or relationship between the BJP and the Rayanna Brigade, he said in a statement that the BJP office bearers, leaders and workers are strictly barred from participating in the Rayanna Brigade's activities.

The party's central leadership has instructed the functionaries not to organise any activity connected with any brigade or other kind of organisations, he added.

Also stating that airing views on party's internal affairs in public and in media has been prohibited, Limbavali warned that 'strict disciplinary' action will be taken in the event of anyone violating these instructions.

Meanwhile, the party sources said Eshwarappa, who was scheduled to meet Muralidhar Rao today, has decided to skip the meeting.

Speaking to the reporters in Tumkuru, Eshwarappa, the leader of the opposition in the legislative council, ruled out the possibility of the party taking any action against him.

The senior leader said he was deeply pained by the action against Bhanuprakash and Surana, noting that they have served the organisation for years.

"What is there to seek report about me from Muralidhar Rao? There is nothing, someone is creating such things... Everyone at the centre knows about my contribution to the BJP organisation since the beginning...," he said in reply to a question.

Reminding that he had served as party's state and yuva morcha presidents, Eshwarappa said, When Yeddyurappa quit the party and formed the KJP, I resigned as the power minister on the directions of the party and took over as the party's state president.

"So I don't think there is any question of taking action against me.

"Why will they take action against workers who have toiled to build the organisation he asked.

The resentment has been brewing within the party over Yeddyurappa's alleged 'unilateral' style of functioning after the appointment of party office-bearers and "ignoring" loyal workers and the old guard of the party.

The fissures within the Karnataka unit have been causing concern among the central leadership which has been hoping for the revival of party's fortunes in the assembly polls early next year and to see the BJP return to power.

Forming the first-ever government in the south, the BJP had ruled the state from 2008 to 2013 which saw three chief ministers taking over the reign one after another amid factional wars and corruption charges, eventually leading to the Congress' return to power.

Hubballi, Apr 23: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday spoke to father of slain student Neha Hiremath over phone and said "sorry" over his daughter's killing, and assured that "we will be on your side".

The Chief Minister also informed Niranjan Hiremath, who is also a Congress councillor of Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, about the government's decision to hand over the murder case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and setting up a special court to fast-track trial.

"Niranjan... very sorry. We will be on your side," Siddaramaiah told Hiremath over the phone call during state's Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil's visit to Hiremath's house here.

In the conversation on Patil's phone with speakers on, Siddaramaiah can be heard informing Hiremath about the CID probe and setting up a special court.

"It is a serious offence... setting up a special court will ensure punishment for the accused person."

Hiremath thanked Siddaramaiah on behalf of his family well-wishers and the community for handing over the case to CID and setting up a special court "...ensure there is an order at the earliest and provide us justice," he said, as he also thanked Patil, Home Minister G Parameshwara, local Congress MLA Prasad Abbayya and others for their support.

Replying to this, Siddaramaiah said, "We will ensure it, at the earliest."

In a shocking incident, Neha Hiremath (23), was stabbed to death on the campus of BVB College last Thursday. The accused Fayaz Khondunaik, who fled from the scene, was arrested by the police subsequently.

Neha was a first year Master of Computer Application (MCA) student and Fayaz was earlier her classmate.

Siddaramaih on Monday had announced his government has decided to hand over the investigation into the incident to the Crime Investigation Department, and to set up a special court for speedy disposal of the case.

The case of brutal murder, which sparked widespread outrage, has snowballed into a political slugfest between ruling Congress and opposition BJP.

While the ruling party has tried to project it as an incident with personal angle, the saffron party has called it a "love jihad" case and has said it's a testimony of deterioration of law and order in the state.

Earlier, Siddarmaiah's statement that the murder was due to "personal reasons" and Home Minister G Parameshwara's comments that the duo was in love, has elicited sharp reactions from Hiremath and family members and opposition parties.

BJP MLA Arabail Shivaram Hebbar’s son Vivek Hebbar on Thursday, 11 April, joined the Congress party along with his supporters at Banavasi in Uttara Kannada district.

After quitting the BJP, Vivek Hebbar joined the party in the presence of state Congress vice president and former MLC Ivan D’Souza and other local party leaders.

Speculations have been rife about his father Shivaram Hebbar, an MLA from the Yellapur Assembly segment, also planning to join the Congress, ever since he did not turn up for voting during the polls to four seats of the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka held on 27 February.

The senior Hebbar’s absence from voting, despite a party whip, had caused embarrassment to the BJP. He had, however, later attributed his absence to poor health.

The BJP had also issued notice to him, which he responded to.

Shivaram Hebbar had recently met Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress chief DK Shivakumar but claimed that the meeting was about water issues in his Assembly segment.

The senior BJP leader was earlier with the Congress. He was among 17 Congress-JD(S) legislators, who had quit from their parties, which ultimately led to the collapse of the then HD Kumaraswamy-led coalition government in July 2019.

Shivaram Hebbar had subsequently won the by-poll on a BJP ticket and served as a minister in the then government of the saffron party.
