Mangaluru, May 18: In an appalling act of cruelty, a group of drug addicts brutally attacked two schoolboys for refusing to smoke ganja at a remote village of Bantwal taluk in Dakshina Kannada district.
The victims have been identified as Sushanth (14), a Class 7 student at Meremajalu Holy Family School and his brother Sumanth (16), a Class 10 student at Nitya Sahaya Maatha High School, Kumudelu. They are residents of Kumudelu near Maripalla in Pudu village of Bantwal taluk.
The police have managed to arrest all the five youths, who tortured the duo. The accused are Shravan, son of Sada from Thumbey, Roshan, Avinash, Charan and Rajesh from Kumudelu.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when Sumanth and Sushanth were playing on the ground belonging to Kumudelu government school located near their house.
The miscreants, who were sitting near the school building and smoking ganja, called the boys and asked them to take a puff after handing them over two ganja-filled spliffs. As the boys refused to do so, the miscreants began to threaten and manhandle them.
When the boys tried to escape, the miscreants surrounded them and forced them to sit on the compound wall of the school. One among the accused, Shravan, thrashed the students with a thick wooden stick before allowing them to go home.
The injured students were later admitted to government hospital in Bantwal for treatment. A case has been registered at Bantwal rural police station and investigations are on. The accused were produced before a court yesterday.
