'BJP on drought study to cover up feud'

May 20, 2017

Bengaluru, May 20: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday mocked the ongoing drought tour of the state BJP leaders, saying “they are going round the state holding umbrellas.”

“BJP leaders have begun drought study tour at a time when the monsoon is about to begin. They should have done it much before. Maybe it was too hot for them to tour all these days... They are now going around the state holding umbrellas,” he said sardonically during an interaction with mediapersons in Bengaluru.

BJP leaders have taken up the drought tour in order to “cover up their infighting”. They do not have any concern for the farming community. They should have gone to Delhi and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to waive farm loans if they had any concern for the farmers, he added.

He pooh-poohed the BJP’s Mission 150 (target to win 150 seats in the next Assembly elections). “Where is Mission 150? Is it in their pocket?... They (BJP leaders) are under an illusion of coming to power. But people of the state will take an appropriate decision,” he added.

Siddaramaiah accused the Modi government of failing to fulfil promises the BJP had made before coming to power at the Centre, and patted his own back for what is said ‘walking the talk.’ He strongly denied charges that he was pro-Ahinda (Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits) and anti-Jilebi (Kannada acronym for Vokkaligas, Lingayats and Brahmins).

“I may talk more in favour of Ahinda, but that does not mean that I am against the poor in other communities. Whether it is Anna Bhagya or Ksheera Bhagya or interest-free farm loans, the poor across all the communities are benefiting from the government schemes. My government is for social justice and for providing opportunities to the oppressed classes,” he stated.

Siddaramaiah claimed that there is no anti-incumbency feeling among people on his government despite it being in power for four years. People are not against the government. They have complete faith in my government. The recent byelections from Nanjangud and Gundlupet Assembly constituencies have proved it, he added.

Siddaramaiah claimed that none of the state Congress leaders brought him to the party, hitting back at his friend-turned-foe and former MP A H Vishwanath.

“I knew Ahmed Patel (political secretary to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi). He directly took me to Madam (Sonia Gandhi)... None of the state Congress leaders brought me to the party,” he added.

He refuted former external affairs minister S M Krishna’s claim that he had introduced Siddaramaiah to Sonia.

The chief minister instead claimed that he had already met the Congress president before meeting Krishna who was the then Maharashtra Governor.

He also refused to comment on Vishwanath’s move to join the JD(S). He admitted that there is intense competition among the leaders for the post of chief minister if the Congress returns to power in the next polls. Siddaramaiah reiterated that he will lead the party in the 2018 Assembly elections and said that the Congress legislature party and the party high command will pick the leader after the elections.

Bengaluru, May 2: Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, was issued fresh summons on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is investigating the case of obscene videos involving the former JD(S) member, several news outlets reported.

The SIT also junked his appeal which sought seven days time to join the probe, as per these reports.

Prajwal and his father, H D Revanna, have sexual harassment and stalking cases filed against them over the matter. Gowda's son, H D Revanna, however, said that what took place '4-5 years ago' is now being turned into a legal case.

JD(S) in its core committee meeting suspended Prajwal from the party till the end of the probe. Prajwal, meanwhile, took to X to state he would join the probe in seven days time, asserting 'truth will prevail'.

Mangaluru, May 6: A five-year-old girl from Arendur village of Siddapura taluk of Uttara Kannada district died of Kyasanur Forest Disease (monkey fever) recently.

As her health deteriorated, she was admitted to the KMC Hospital in Mangaluru, where she failed to respond to the treatment and died on Friday night.

It is learned that the KFD is slowly spreading to the newer areas of coastal and malnad areas of Karnataka

According to officials, KFD spreads due to bites of ticks that generally survive on monkeys. This tick bites humans which causes the infection. Humans also contract the disease by coming in contact with cattle bitten by ticks.

Several women, believed to be victims of Prajwal Revanna, have left their homes in Karnataka's Hassan district over the last ten days, according to media reports.

These departures reportedly come amid fear and stigma after their identities became public due to the circulating video clips showing the women who were allegedly sexually assaulted by Prajwal Revanna.

"The entire district is in H D Revanna’s control. You speak ill about them and chances are high that it will reach them, because the family and the party have a large following," a shopkeeper in Hagare - 20 km from Hassan – was quoted as saying by the news paper.

Hassan is the bastion of the JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda, and Prajwal, his grandson, is the sitting MP.

The family of the woman whose complaint was the basis of the first FIR against Prajwal has now left their home, the publication reported, citing a neighbour who said, "The woman worked at Revanna’s house as a house help. Some of her videos started to circulate and then, her house was seen locked. We don’t know when she left."

Notably, a former Zilla Panchayat member has also filed a rape case against Prajwal, and in that village many women who worked for the party formerly are now incommunicado, a JD(S) leader told the publication. "We noticed many of the party women deleting their photos with Prajwal on social media. In some instances, men are questioning their wives about their association with the MP. It is shattering the lives of many women in the district," he said.

The local leader added that the former Zilla Panchayat member was there on April 24, but no one had seen the family since the videos came out.

The case is currently being probed by an SIT team and when they reached the Revanna residence, party workers were reportedly heard talking about the women. "I know this woman, she lived close to our residence and was very active in JD(S) activities. Her house is locked… she has small children," one said, as per IE.

Another shopkeeper added, "It was really wrong to reveal the faces of the women. I know some of them, and they have gone into hiding. We don’t know whether they can return."

He noted that it is impossible to survive in Hassan while fighting a case against the Revanna family.

While Prajwal's father, H D Revanna is in SIT custody, a Blue Corner notice has been issued against the sitting MP.
