SIT to quiz IAS officer Tewari's guest house roommate

May 20, 2017

Lucknow/Bengaluru, May 20: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh police will question Karnataka cadre IAS officer Anurag Tewari’s friend and fellow IAS officer, P N Singh, who is said to have stayed with him in the government guest house in Lucknow the night before the former was found dead on May 17.

Anurag

Tewari, who was Commissioner, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department in Karnataka, was found lying on the roadside a few metres from Meerabai Guest House in Hazratganj locality of Lucknow. Investigators have inspected the room where he had stayed as well as the place where his body was found, a police source said. The is no CCTV footage of Tewari’s departure from the guest house. What’s more, the guest house does not have any record of anybody visiting Tewari during his stay, the source said.

A police officer who is part of the investigation refused to disclose the progress of the probe. The police source, however, said the SIT would submit its report to the Uttar Pradesh government in 72 hours.

The post-mortem of Tewari’s body has remained inconclusive. Doctors have preserved his viscera and heart for forensic examination. Tewari’s family has raised suspicion over the investigation and demanded a CBI probe into his mysterious death.

CM seeks ‘thorough’ probe

In a letter to his UP counterpart Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said Tewari was an upright IAS officer, and his untimely and unfortunate demise had caused great anguish.

“It is very important that the death is thoroughly investigated by a competent team of investigators and professionals. I would request you to kindly direct the authorities concerned to do the needful,” the chief minister said.

Home Minister G Parameshwara held a meeting with top police officers to discuss issues related to the death of the officer in the wake of the possible arrival of the SIT team. Among those present was Bengaluru Police Commissioner Praveen Sood.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Parameshwara said the Karnataka government would fully co-operate with the SIT. “We still do not know the cause of death. Even if CBI investigation is required to know the cause of death, we will extend full co-operation,” he said.

He said Karnataka had no objection if Uttar Pradesh referred the case to the CBI. Karnataka cannot refer the case to the CBI as the death has taken place in Uttar Pradesh, he pointed out.

Responding to the allegation by the Karnataka unit of the BJP that Tewari’s death was linked to the “Rs 2,000-crore scam” he was to expose in the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, Parameshwara dared the BJP leaders to support the allegation with evidence. “Let them (BJP leaders) raise this so-called scam in the legislature session that begins on June 5. The BJP can also ask the Uttar Pradesh government to order a CBI probe and give all the evidence it has to the CBI, he added.

In a letter to Adityanath, BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje requested him to refer the case to the CBI.

Mangaluru: Disgruntled BJP leader and former MLA K Raghupathi Bhat, who is contesting the legislative council election as an independent candidate from the South West Graduates constituency, said the BJP has adopted the “godfather culture” of the Congress.

Bhat told reporters here on Saturday, that he has not tried to appease any senior BJP leaders to get a party ticket to contest the MLC poll.

“I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My contesting may have a negative impact on the BJP. However, I want to go back to the BJP after winning this election,” Bhat said, and refused to answer the actual reason for the denial of a BJP ticket to him.

“I have no idea who played from behind that I was denied a ticket for the MLC poll.

Earlier, the BJP had a culture of selecting candidates for MLA and MLC polls by seeking the opinion of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at mandal and district levels.

Now the situation is such that even if one person’s name was sent from the state, the final list will be different. The godfather culture of the Congress has stretched into our party too. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence I am contesting the election,” Bhat said.

To a query, Bhat said that he has not contacted by BJP leaders after deciding to contest the MLC poll.

“I have already requested all leaders that I should get the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have told them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. The ultimate aim of my contesting the election is that senior leaders should know the injustice that honest party workers are facing in the BJP,” he said.

Madikeri, May 11: Kodagu police have apprehended the man allegedly responsible for the brutal murder of a minor girl within the confines of Kumbaragadige village in Karnataka's Somwarpet taluk.

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, K Ramarajan, disclosed that the arrested individual is Prakash (32) from Hammiyala village in Somwarpet taluk. However, authorities are still in the process of recovering the severed head of the victim. The perpetrator had absconded with the victim's severed head after committing the crime.

Search operations for the suspect commenced late on Thursday night (May 9), with officials diligently pursuing leads. Acting on information suggesting the suspect's presence in a forested area near the village, the police swiftly moved in and apprehended him.

The victim US Meena, 15, a student of Surlabbi High School, had passed the SSLC examinations, the results of which were announced on May. One same day, she was murdered.

Reportedly, the engagement of the minor girl with the suspect was thwarted by officials from the Women and Child Development department. Subsequently, officials persuaded the girl's parents against proceeding with the marriage.

However, despite these interventions, the suspect forcibly entered her residence during the night, purportedly abducted her, and later perpetrated the heinous crime in a wooded area on the outskirts of the forest, before absconding with her severed head.
