After 40 minutes of silence at Jaya memorial, OP shatters Sasikala's peace

February 8, 2017

Chennai, Feb 8: After appearing to be a willing pawn in the hands of V K Sasikala ever since J Jayalalithaa's death on December 5, Tamil Nadu caretaker chief minister O Panneerselvam shocked everyone on Tuesday night, accusing Sasikala and senior party leaders of "forcing" him to resign as the chief minister.

The surprise development triggered questions over Sasikala's proposed swearing-in and murmurs on the possibility of President's rule in the state. After Panneerselvam said he would withdraw his resignation if party cadres so wished, several ministers rushed to Poes Garden, some concerned about a split in the party. DMK leader M K Stalin urged the governor to ensure a "valid government."

OPS chose former chief minister J Jayalalithaa's resting place on Marina beach as the stage for his dramatic outpouring. Around 9pm, he walked in with minimal security and sat in meditation. After 40 minutes, he woke up with a vow to "fight it out all alone to save the glory of the party".

He said his cabinet colleagues R B Udhaya Kumar and Sellur K Raju, and party leader K A Sengottaiyan insulted him and demanded that Sasikala should be made CM. "I was forced to convene a meeting of party MLAs on Sunday, but was kept in the dark that it was meant for electing Sasikala as the legislature party leader," he said.

When he asked why the hurry, he was threatened with disciplinary action. "When I sought permission to visit Amma's memorial, I was told that I could do it later," said Panneerselvam.

Then and there he was forced to put in his papers, he said. Some party leaders, who rushed to Poes Garden, said the governor was acting on the Centre's directives. "Given that verdict in disproportionate assets case is expected in a week's time, we suspect the Centre is behind the move," said a senior minister.

Sources said governor must have consulted legal experts who felt it would be better for Sasikala to wait till the SC verdict. Some party leaders believe OPS has the backing of the BJP government at the Centre. "No wonder that M Natarajan, Sasikala's husband, had recently accused the Modi government of making an attempt to destabilise the government and saffronise the state.

This suspicion was further fuelled by Modi's decision to meet only OPS and not the AIADMK MPs who sought his appointment over the jallikattu ordinance ," said an MP. Lok Sabha deputy speaker M Thambidurai had criticised the PM for not giving an audience.

New Delhi: Seventeen Indians are on board an Israeli-linked container ship that has been seized by the Iranian military amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

Official sources said India is in touch with Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, both in Tehran and in Delhi, to ensure the welfare and early release of the Indian nationals.

The Iranian action came amid increasing fears that Tehran may launch an attack on Israeli soil in retaliation to a strike on the Iranian consulate in Syria 12 days ago.

"We are aware that a cargo ship 'MSC Aries' has been taken control by Iran. We have learnt that there are 17 Indian nationals onboard," said a source.

"We are in touch with the Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels, both in Tehran and in Delhi, to ensure security, welfare and early release of Indian nationals," it said.

Reports said Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards seized MSC Aries on Saturday morning when it was sailing through the Strait of Hormuz.

New Delhi: At least 38 Vistara flights originating from key cities were cancelled this morning as the airline reeled under non-availability of pilots. As many as 15 flights taking off from Mumbai, 12 from Delhi and 11 from Bengaluru were among those cancelled.

This comes after more than 50 Vistara flights were cancelled yesterday and about 160 delayed. Passengers had yesterday complained of poor communication and hours-long wait at the airport and slammed the airline for harassing passengers.

Vistara said in a statement yesterday that they have faced a "significant number" of flight cancellations and delays in the past few days "due to various reasons including crew unavailability".

"We acknowledge and are deeply concerned about the inconvenience this has caused to our customers. Having said that, our teams are working towards minimizing the discomfort to the customers," it said.

The airline has also said that it has decided to temporarily reduce the number of flights it operates "to ensure adequate connectivity across our network".

"We have also deployed larger aircraft like our B787-9 Dreamliner and A321neo on select domestic routes to combine flights or accommodate more number of customers, wherever possible. Furthermore, we are offering alternate flight options or refunds to affected customers, as applicable. Once again, we understand that these disruptions have caused immense discomfort to our customers, and sincerely apologise to them for the same. We are working towards stabilizing the situation and will resume operating our regular capacity very soon," the statement added.

Vistara pilots, it is learnt, are calling in sick as they protest the revised salary structure ahead of the airline's merger with Air India. The pilots have been sent the revised pay structure over mail and asked to sign on short notice. The pilots have been warned that those who don't sign will be left out of the merger.

Their flights cancelled or delayed by hours, fliers have taken to social media to express their grievances. The airline has been reiterating that the delays have been caused by operational issues and that it is working on them.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has sought a detailed report from Vistara regarding flight cancellations and major delays, a senior official has told news agency ANI.

Passengers are advised to check flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport to avoid long wait and inconvenience.

“All those who are currently residing in Iran or Israel are requested to get in touch with Indian Embassies there and register themselves,” the MEA said.

“They are also requested to observe utmost precautions about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum,” it added.
