Bangalore, September 4: After completing a 2-0 series win over New Zealand, Indian skipper MS Dhoni lavished praise on spinners R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha, saying the TN-Hyderabad duo has been supporting each other well.

Excerpts:

On spinners: I think it was a well-fought series. One definite area where we would like is playing on turning tracks. That’s something we didn’t get in the series. But still the spinners bowled really well in Hyderabad and Bangalore. It’s pleasing to see them fighting on tracks which really didn’t help them, especially in the first innings. Fast bowlers have to chip in a bit although they bowled quite well. There was not much for fast bowlers as well.

On Ashwin: He is bowling brilliantly. If you see both Tests, there were some periods were the spinners got some assistance from the pitch. Overall, the wickets were quite good to bat on and we had to bowl consistently in one area that I felt at sometimes made it difficult for Ashwin, because he is someone who loves to take wickets. He is someone who has got variations. The good thing is that both the spinners complement each other. When one is taking wickets, the other one keeps it tight so that the batsmen are not taking too many runs off them. They are hunting well together.

On Raina’s batting: There are two ways of fighting pressure – one is to take the fight on and look for big shots. In the first innings, he went out there and played his shots. Then he could’ve nicked one and then the same question could have been asked. Different people react differently to different situations. You learn from your experience. In Test cricket, at times, you have to soak up the pressure and at time you’ve to retaliate. You have to find the right mix and at times.

On whether there’s any change in his batting: With Virat batting at five and Raina at six, when I go out there, one of them usually stays there. Then what happens is that you can run hard and you can change strike so that the same batsman is not playing too many deliveries. But otherwise, I haven’t changed too much. Whenever the ball is in my area, I look to hit it. I’m not really curbing my instincts but I want to improve as a cricketer. That’s my plan as if now.
