Bangalore, July 20: Former Union minister and senior Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary on Thursday said K G Bopaiah should immediately quit as the Assembly Speaker for seeking statehood for Kodagu district.
Addressing a press conference here, Poojary said Bopaiah’s statement amounted to endangering the integrity of Karnataka. The Speaker is poisoning the minds of the people by suggesting that Kodagu should be a separate state in order to preserve its green heritage.
Commenting on the Unesco World Heritage tag to the Western Ghats, Bopaiah had on Wednesday said that he hailed from Kodagu and knew better about the issues concerning the region.
He also said that if separate statehood was given to Kodagu, people there would “manage it”.
Poojary said the BJP and the RSS were trying to create a rift between the Bunt and Billava communities in the State by refusing a ministerial berth to Kundapur MLA Haladi Srinivas Shetty and promoting Kota Srinivas Poojary.
