Mumbai, July 20: One person has died and eight others have been injured after a portion of the Eastern Expressway flyover collapsed in Shanti Nagar in Mumbai's Wadala area.

The incident took place at around 10.45 pm when a portion of the flyover fell on the vehicles underneath, trapping nine people under the debris. The eight people who were injured in the collapse were rushed to nearby hospitals. A truck, parked underneath the flyover, was completely smashed.

Initial reports had suggested that a portion of the monorail section, which is next to the flyover, had collapsed. However, officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the city's planning body, later clarified that it was actually a part of Eastern Expressway flyover, connecting south and Navi Mumbai.

"Action against the contractor will be swift and harsh if there is any lacunae," said MMRDA Chairman Rahul Asthana.
