New Delhi, Aug 22: As the grand celebrations of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi have started today, the idol makers across the national capital have prepared Ganesh idols, in expectations of meeting demand amid the pandemic.

Albeit artists have opened their stalls, the business of these idol makers has been strongly hampered due to the uncertainties around coronavirus. Let's take a look at how the idol makers have been putting their efforts around the festival just like every other year.

Unlike last year, the streets of A K Roy Marg, Matka Market, ahead of the festival, are noticeably empty with only a few families coming in and placing their orders.

"Compared to last year, the sales have gone completely down. Making of idols is our family business, and we have been doing it for years. This might be the first time that we are facing such dip in orders from customers," said Uttam Kumar to ANI, an idol maker who has his stall in Matka Market, near Sarojini Nagar.

Sitting next to Kumar is his long-time friend Sonu, who too, has taken up the family business of idol making. During an interaction with ANI, the two took a trip down the memory lane, reminiscing about the rush, and swift orders of Ganesh idols that used to take place a week before Ganesh Chaturthi.

Talking about the preparation, the 30-year-old artist noted that the planning and supplies of materials began three-four months back. Most of the items and many Ganesh idols in their stalls are from Kolkata.

"We started the preparation in April-June, but even the raw material and supplies to reach here in Delhi from Kolkata had issues due to the restrictions of movement owing to COVID-19," he added.

Another lady, while carefully taking her 4-feet-tall Ganesh idol made of mud, back to her stall amid the drizzling rain talked to ANI about how the majority of stalls in Matka Market have concentrated on avoiding idols made of PoP (Plaster of Paris).

The artist who did not wish to reveal her name said, after the decision to call off the use of PoP by the authorities, many among them have made a conscious effort to make idols of mud or clay or the ones that are not harmful to nature.

However, she mentioned that only families, who are ready to take home Ganesh "murti" are coming to place orders, but not many pandal organisers have approached them so far to buy or place orders for Ganesh idols for the festival.

"There are no bulk-orders, unlike last year, and family is also conscious of purchasing idols that are of short-height."

Meanwhile, Ajay Shastri and Neelima Bhagwat, the husband-wife duo who runs eco-friendly Ganesh idols shop at Jankakpuri, Desu colony, are also facing slight problems in their sales for this year.

The couple, who have been running the shop for the last eight years have since then focused on making Ganesh idols, purely out of clay, and other eco-friendly substances that are in no way harmful to the environment.

The 12-15 labourers, who are working for them from Mumbai are also facing consequences due to the hit of COVID-19. Not only because of the spread of the virus but also the heavy rain that the coastal state had to bear recently, brought gloom among the idol makers.

"They are facing financial problems, and the labour cost has also increased," said Shastri to ANI.

Talking about his business, here in Delhi, the owner said: "The main difference this year is that customers who used to get 18-24 feet Ganesh idols every year have demanded 6-8 feet idols this year."

Having a wide range in the size of idols from 6-feet to maximum 24-feet, the couple's business, according to them is going "fine", however they are focusing on bringing more small-sized idols to meet the growing demand.

The 10-day festivities of Ganesh Chaturthi, the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, begins today. The festivities will end with the final immersion of the Ganesha idols, called the Visarjan.

The festival is celebrated with much grandeur in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat among other states.

An Israeli airstrike on the office of Syria’s Baath party in Lebanon’s capital Beirut has killed the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah's Media Relations Officer, Mohammad Afif, reports say.

Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported that the Israeli raid struck the Ba'ath party’s building in central Beirut district of Ras Al-Naba'a on Sunday, adding that the strike was an attempt to assassinate the leader of the resistance media front.

According to Baath Secretary-General Ali Hijazi, Afif was having a meeting in the Baath Party headquarters when Israel carried out the attack.

"Afif did not fight with weapons and did not lead a military unit in Hezbollah. Rather, he led a media unit," he said.

Reuters, Sky News, Al Jazeera and a number of Henrew-language media reported that Afif was killed in the Israeli strike.

However, Hezbollah has not yet confirmed Afif’s death or whether he was present at the site or not.

Earlier, the Lebanese Health Ministry said at least one person was killed and three others injured after an Israeli strike targeted a central district in Beirut.

Lebanon's al-Mayadeen television network reported that five people were killed in the attack.

The latest development came after Afif said Hezbollah was behind the Caesarea operation and targeting Netanyahu’s home during a speech at the Ghobeiry area in the southern suburbs of Beirut on October 22.

This was the second assassination attempt on Afif in the last two months, after he survived an attack on the Hezbollah media relations office several weeks ago.

Israel launched a ground assault and massive air campaign against Lebanon in late September after a year of exchanging fire across the Lebanese border in parallel with the Gaza war.

At least 3,287 people have been killed in Israeli strikes in Lebanon over the past year, with the vast majority in the past seven weeks. Another 14,222 have been wounded, mostly women and children.

In response to the ongoing aggression, the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has been staging hundreds of retaliatory strikes against the occupied Palestinian territories and the Israeli forces trying to advance on southern Lebanese areas.

The movement has vowed to sustain its strikes until the regime ends the escalation.

Mangaluru: A five-year-long pursuit of justice continues for several youths from Dakshina Kannada who fell victim to a fraudulent food delivery job scam in Kuwait. The victims, lured by promises of lucrative overseas employment, now find themselves entangled in legal battles and financial ruin.

In a recent development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) summoned the victims to its Mangaluru office as part of the ongoing investigation. The case, which dates back to May 28, 2019, was initially registered at the Mangaluru North police station based on a complaint filed by Usman, a resident of Jalligudde. His brother, Aboobakkar Siddique, was among the 34 victims duped by Manikya Associates, a recruitment agency operated by Prasad Shetty.

According to the complaint, the victims were promised jobs as food delivery executives in Kuwait with a salary of ₹40,000 per month. “I paid ₹80,000 to the agent and ended up spending seven harrowing months in Kuwait without any salary,” shared a victim who now works in construction. Another victim, now employed as a driver, said, “I dreamt of working abroad to support my family. I even pledged jewelry to pay the fees, but it took me years to recover financially.”

The victims allege that they were left stranded in Kuwait in January 2019 after completing all formalities. With no jobs and mounting expenses, their ordeal lasted seven months. They were eventually repatriated with the help of Indian expats and the Embassy of India in Kuwait, just two months after the complaint was filed.

The ED investigation is reportedly progressing, and victims said they were assured that their payments to the agent would be refunded soon. An ED official confirmed that efforts to ensure justice are ongoing.

For these youths, the pain of shattered dreams and financial losses has lingered for years, with many still struggling to rebuild their lives. As they await justice, their plight serves as a cautionary tale about the perils of fraudulent recruitment schemes.

Bengaluru: The Janata Dal (Secular) is grappling with its most tumultuous political crisis yet, with speculation rife about imminent defections among its lawmakers. This storm comes in the aftermath of party scion Nikhil Kumaraswamy's humiliating defeat in the Channapatna bypoll—his third consecutive electoral loss after setbacks in Mandya (2019) and Ramanagara (2023). With the regional party’s Assembly tally shrinking to 18 from 19, questions are being raised about its survival.

The murmurs of rebellion were amplified on Monday when Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Congress MLA CP Yogeshwar openly hinted at possible desertions within the JD(S) ranks. Yogeshwar, newly elected from Channapatna, declared he could orchestrate a migration of JD(S) MLAs to Congress. “I’ll meet them at the Belagavi session. Within a month, they’ll be in Congress,” he confidently stated during a televised interview. Yogeshwar has a history of engineering defections, having played a pivotal role in the collapse of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government in 2019 during his stint with the BJP.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, not mincing words, slammed the JD(S) leadership for fostering "self-serving politics," criticizing the HD Deve Gowda family for failing to nurture party talent. “There’s no trust. Their MLAs will seek survival—either in BJP or Congress,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, the expelled JD(S) state president CM Ibrahim added fuel to the fire by claiming that 12-13 MLAs are "disillusioned" with the current leadership. Speculations around senior JD(S) leader GT Deve Gowda joining Congress have also intensified. DK Shivakumar, Karnataka’s Deputy CM and Congress president, described GT Deve Gowda as a “valuable leader” who might be frustrated with the party’s internal dynamics.

While Congress leaders seem eager to poach JD(S) legislators, the BJP is not far behind in targeting the floundering party. The situation signals a decisive moment for the JD(S), as its survival now hinges on how it manages this brewing storm of discontent.
