New Delhi, Dec 30: Kapil Gurjar, the man who shot to fame for opening fire near the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protest site in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh almost a year ago, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Kapil Gurjar, also known as Kapil Baisla, was welcomed into the party by Ghaziabad BJP officials.
After taking the political plunge, Gurjar said that he decided to join the BJP because the party works for Hindutva.
Kapil Gujjar had come to Shaheen Bagh area, where thousands were sitting on a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), on February 1 and fired two rounds in the air. Kapil Gujjar was arrested and taken into custody right after that.
Past political links
During police interrogation, Gurjar had told cops that he and his father Gaje Singh were members of the Aam Aadmi Party since 2019.
In the photos, accessed from the phone, Kapil Gurjar can be seen with senior leaders of the AAP like Sanjay Singh and Aatishi along with his supporters.
However, both AAP and Gurjar’s family refuted the claim. The family at the time told media that Kapil Gujjar's father had contested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) election in 2012 on a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) ticket and lost, but they have never been associated with AAP.
Reason for shooting
Kapil Gurjar had told police that he went to the site of anti-CAA protest because he was annoyed with the traffic disruptions caused by road blockage. Gurjar said his family was in process of preparing for his sister’s wedding, which is why he had to spend hours in traffic jams caused due to the road closure due to protests.
Kapil Gurjar was granted bail by the Delhi court.
