Chennai, Nov 22: Legendary Indian Carnatic singer and multi-instrumentalist M Balamurali Krishna died here on Tuesday evening after prolonged illness.He was 86.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, Balamurali Krishna, who started performing at the age of eight, has participated in over 25,000 Carnatic music concerts across the globe.
After mastering more than 72 melakartha ragas, Balamurali Krishna also composed krithis in the same. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, country's second-highest civilian honour.
While his native tongue was Telugu, he sung with crystal-clear lyrical enunciation not just in Telugu but also in Kannada, Sanskrit, Tamil and less often, in a few other languages as well.
The Carnatic music world has expressed shock over Balamurali Krishna's demise. His body has been kept at his Alwarpet house in Chennai to allow fans to pay their last respect.
