Belagavi, Dec 6: 'Marriages are made in Heaven' and for this young bride and groom the graveyard became heaven as they entered wedlock at Sadashivanagar graveyard here on Thursday.
Former Minister Satish Jarkiholi had organized a programme of graveyard stay under the banner of 'Manav Bandhutva Vedike' on death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar as ‘anti-superstition day’.
The inter-caste marriage took place with Rekha from Hirebagewadi and Balakrishna Sopan of Khanapur taluk in the District exchanging the garlands on the main stage at the graveyard.
Hundreds of people witnessed the rare event. Prominent personalities like retired High Court Judge Justice H N Nagmohan Das, noted writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa and many progressive seers were also present.
Mr Jarkiholi said it’s a historical moment in Manav Bandhutva Vedike’s campaign against superstitions. He presented a cheque for Rs 50,000 to the couple.
Mr Jarkiholi urged Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to double the amount given for inter-caste marriages.
