Mangaluru, Oct 27: A notorious gangster from Kerala has been arrested by the Dakshina Kannada police in connection with the coldblooded murder of his aide Unnikrishnan, whose body was found on September 3 at Kuppetti village near Uppinangady in the coastal district of Karnataka.
40-year-old gangster Anas was picked up by the police from Kakanad. He is the fifth person to be arrested by the police in connection with this case.
According to sources, Anas has several associates, who are engaged in illegal activities which range from gold smuggling, kidnapping, land deals and other businesses. Several cases have been booked against him in Kerala.
The victim Unnikrishnan was a close aide of Anas, and would look after his illegal activities in Dakshina Kannada, Madikeri and others places in Karnataka, according to sources from the police department. It is still not clear why he planned to murder a member of his own gang.
Earlier police arrested Jeethu Sajee, 23, a resident of Ernakulam and Suhail Nazar, 22, a resident of Tayakakattagere taluk in Enrakulam, Aurangazeb, 37, a resident of Ernakulam and Mohammed Shamnaz, 23, a resident of Palakkad.
A case under various sections of the IPC, including Section 302 (murder), had been registered at the Uppinangadi police station. All the arrested accused have criminal antecedents.
