Belagavi, Oct 2: Tension prevailed at the Rani Channamma University in Belagavi on Monday when a group of supporters of former Minister Satish Jarkiholi barged in, ransacked the varsity property and argued with the Vice-Chancellor. The miscreants were upset that the university was not inviting their leader and local MLA Mr. Jarkiholi for its functions.
According to sources, the group led by Siddu Sunagar, Zilla Panchayat member from Kakati, tried to barge into the Vice-Chancellor Shivanand Hosmani’s office. When the security officers tried to stop them, there was a quarrel between the two groups.
Some students joined in and started arguing with the Congress leader in raised voices. Mr. Sunagar demanded that the Vice-Chancellor come out of his chamber to meet the protestors. Some of Mr. Sunagar’s associates broke the windowpanes of the university office. After some time, when the Vice-Chancellor came out, he had a heated argument with Mr. Sunagar.
Mr. Sunagar said that the Vice-Chancellor was purposefully avoiding inviting Mr. Jarkiholi to the university’s programmes. The university had failed to invite Mr. Jarkiholi to a blood donation drive on Monday. The university officers did not invite the former Minister to a function to launch new civil works recently. This is being deliberately done to insult Mr. Jarkiholi, he added.
Eyewitnesses said that when Dr. Hosmani tried to explain, some of Mr. Sunagar’s followers pushed him around. Later, Mr. Sunagar told presspersons that they had no intention to cause trouble. “We went there to talk to the officers. But they got into heated exchanges with us and that led to a commotion,” he said.
ABVP leader Rajesh Badiger has condemned this incident. And, no police complaint has been filed in this incident.
