Manjeshwar, Mar 27: The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded K Surendran, one of the several Kerala general secretaries, as its candidate in the Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha constituency, where the Sabarimala temple is located.

Known for his controversial speeches, and topsy-turvy translations, K Surendran had lost 2016 assembly polls by 89 votes to Muslim League in Manjeshwar seat of Kasaragod district.

He was a champion of the street agitations to deny entry for menstruating age women in Sabarimala, despite a Supreme Court order, which led to clashes and his arrest. His candidature was caught in internal factional wars, Mint reported on 19 March.

For the party that has never won a Lok Sabha seat in Kerala, the fights to deny temple entry for women in Sabarimala was supposed to be, in the words of BJP Kerala president Sreedharan Pillai, "a golden chance" in the 2019 parliamentary contest in Kerala. Its nerve center, Pathanamthitta, is seen as one of the seats where the party has a fighting chance to put up a three-cornered contest.

During the last few weeks, state BJP leaders were seen openly vying to get the ticket to contest from Pathanamthitta. At least four major BJP leaders wanted to contest from the seat—Sreedharan Pillai, union minister of state for tourism Alphons Kannanthanam, BJP general secretaries K Surendran and MT Ramesh. They were not willing to contest from anywhere else, Mint reported.

Mangaluru: A Mangaluru-based entrepreneur fell victim to a WhatsApp fraud, losing ₹2.7 lakh to a scammer posing as a supplier of recycled plastic granules.

The victim, who owns a unit in the Baikampady Industrial Area, was first contacted on July 24 by an individual claiming to be a granule manufacturer based in Maharashtra. The scammer, identifying himself as Nirmal Shah and representing "Zaveri Plastics," resurfaced on November 22 with a business proposal.

In need of raw materials, the entrepreneur placed an order for one metric tonne of Natural Film Grade RP Granules and transferred ₹2.7 lakh in instalments between November 25 and 28. The scammer provided invoices and a transport receipt, claiming the goods were dispatched via Balaji Transport and would arrive on November 29.

When the delivery didn’t materialize, the entrepreneur discovered that all contact numbers, including those for the transporter and driver, were unreachable. Further inquiries revealed no ties between the scammer and the legitimate Zaveri Plastics.

A case has been registered at Panambur police station, and investigations are ongoing.

Bengaluru: Karnataka has declared a holiday for state government offices, schools and colleges on Wednesday, December 11, in the wake of a state funeral for former chief minister S M Krishna, who passed away in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

The last rites of Krishna, 92, will be held at his native village of Somanahalli in Mandya's Maddur taluk.

A government order stated that the holiday would apply to private aided educational institutions too.

Besides, the government has declared three days of mourning (December 10-12), during which no public entertainment programmes would take place, while the national flag would fly at half-mast.

S M Krishna passed away at his residence on December 10, 2024. The 92-year-old veteran politician was ailing for quite some time, a family source said.

A charismatic leader with a modern outlook, he not only laid a strong foundation for the growth of IT and BT industries in Karnataka but also managed to get them onboard with the government to build “Brand Bengaluru” at the international level.

He held several prominent positions throughout his career as External Affairs Minister, Maharashtra Governor, Chief Minister of Karnataka, Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Minister in the Karnataka government.

Although known for his tech savviness, flamboyancy, style and the Western outlook, the Congressman-turned-BJP senior leader was a hardcore Bengalorean who loved the city’s trees and flowers. SMK also had a love for tennis. Even when he was Chief Minister, he would visit the tennis court to play the game two to three times a week.
