Mangaluru, Nov 2: Shaikh A P Aboobakar Ahmed Musliyar, the general secretary of All India Sunni Jamiyyatul Ulema, exhorted the people of Karnataka, to give utmost priority to communal harmony, brotherhood and national integrity.

He was addressing thousands of activists of Sunni Students Federation during the valedictory function of Karnataka Yatra at Nehru Maidan in the city on Sunday evening.

The Yatra, which covered Gulbarga, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Hubli, Haveri, Bellary, Davangere, Shimoga, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Hasan, Tumkur, Bangalore, Ramnagar, Mandya, Mysore, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts under the leadership of Musliyar in nine days, was organized under the theme Respect the Mankind' to mark the silver jubilee of SSF.

In his 15-minute speech in Malayalam, the Musliyar reiterated thrice that being Indians we should always uphold the integrity of the country. “We all are Indians. Being Indians, Muslims should always be at the forefront in safeguarding the nation's security and integrity,” he said.

He, however, pointed out that harassing innocent civilians in the name of nation's security is condemnable.

Asserting that India is blessed with a great constitution and best rule of law machinery, he said those who violate law and take law into their hands deserve stringent action.

Laying emphasis on the importance of preserving and promoting communal harmony, he warned that disharmony and internal conflicts are always a threat for nation's integrity.

“In case there have been differences of opinion between Hindus and Muslims in certain issues, leaders of both communities should come together to sort out the problems,” he suggested.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah, Pejwar Mutt chief pontiff Visweswara Theertha Swamy, Forest minister B Ramanath Rai, Heatlh Minister U T Khader, Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and other prominent social, religious and political leaders, who were present at the programme, hailed the nine-day long Karnataka Yatra of Musliyar and expressed all support to him.

Speaking on the occasion Siddaramaiah said that the government would deal with acts of extremism or communalism with an iron fist irrespective of political pressures. He said that those indulging in such acts should remember that they would be harming their own brethren.

He said it was heartening to learn that Musliyar led the Yatre for about 2,700 kms from Kalaburgi to Mangaluru in nine days spreading the message of harmony.

With the improvement of literacy, it is tragic that more educated youth are deviating from the mainstream and resorting to extremism and communalism, he said.

In such a situation, efforts to inculcate moral values among the youth were welcome. If anybody indulges in extremist or communal activities, the government would not tolerate the same and would curb such acts, he said.

The CM said some term his acts as appeasement of minorities. “But I am discharging the constitutional obligation of ensuring equality to all through many schemes and actions,” he said referring to welfare schemes and administrative actions.

He urged the massive gathering of the youth to vow that they would not indulge in extremist activities.

On the occasion, philanthropist Dr Shamsheer, the son in law of M A Yousuff Ali was conferred with Markaz Humanitarian Youth Award. NRI activist Shaikh Bawa was conferred with Human Service Award.

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
